STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – Wagner fencing head coach David Sierra has announced the addition of Bernardo Cisternas to the Seahawks' coaching staff as the Epee coach.
Cisternas brings more than two decades of experience in both Foil and Epee coaching to Grymes Hill. His career began in 2002 as an assistant Foil coach for the Chilean national fencing team, where he was later elevated to head Foil coach in 2007. Following his tenure with the Chilean team, he spent three years coaching at Circolo Ravennate della Spada in Italy before embarking on a nine-year stint at the Recreation and Sports Institutes of Bogotá and Medellín in Colombia.
Since arriving in the United States, Cisternas has continued to make an impact on the fencing community. He joined the South Brooklyn Fencing Club in 2022 as a beginner coach and, in 2023, began working with the Prescot Institute for Sport, Teamwork, and Education (PISTE) fencing academy. He continues to coach there, offering both group and private lessons.
"Adding Bernardo to our coaching staff is a big win all the way around," said head coach
David Sierra. "His in-depth knowledge of epee will be a great asset to the epee squad."
