Staten Island, NY - The Wagner baseball team ended its regular season slate with a 9-5 loss to FDU on Saturday at SIUH Community Park. With the result, the Seahawks slot into the 4-seed in the Northeast Conference (NEC) Tournament.
The Green & White once again started strong, taking an early 2-0 lead on the Knights. Senior Cole Kumpf recorded the first RBI of the contest on a single to right before graduate student Henry Martinez doubled in Kumpf.
However, FDU instantly responded with a three-run third. It was a lead it would not relinquish.
Wagner had some moments throughout the contest where it looked like it would climb back into it, but the Knights pitching duo of Zac Capps and Vladimir Ceverino recorded 13 strikeouts on the day to limit the damage.
Graduate student David Melfi was the catalyst behind Wagner's near comebacks, launching a pair of home runs in the sixth and eighth innings.Â
Melfi, Kumpf and junior Albert Serrano each recorded multiple hits. On the pitching side of things, junior Jake Toporek, freshman Christopher Collina and senior Eli Shedd allowed zero runs during each of their respective innings of work.
The Seahawks finish the regular season with a 25-28 overall record and 21-12 record in conference. They will square off against 5-seed Delaware State on Wednesday in the opening round of the NEC Tournament at 3:00 pm.
