Wappingers Falls, NY - Behind a crucial three-run seventh, the Wagner baseball team advanced to the winner's bracket of the Northeast Conference (NEC) Tournament with a 10-8 victory over 5-seed Delaware State at Heritage Financial Park on Wednesday.
The Seahawks trailed 8-7 with nine outs remaining, but clutch hitting in the seventh put the game to rest.
An infield single from senior Lukas Torres scored senior Chris Conniff from second, tying the matchup at eight. Redshirt senior Xavier Ulrich then ignited the Wagner dugout with a two-RBI single to make it 10-8.
After another strong inning from junior Andrew Stanley, graduate student Alec Burnett came in for the close, moving his mark up to eight saves on the year.
Wagner ran up the score early thanks to a five-run fourth inning. Senior Ariv Camacho made it 3-0 on a single to center before junior Albert Serrano nearly brought home three runs on a blast to left center. Ulrich then wrapped up the scoring with a double to left, putting the score at 6-0.
But the Hornets responded with a vengeance, scoring seven runs in the top half of the fifth to take control of the game. Enter Stanley, who hurled 3.1 innings in the win. He allowed just one run on one hit and struck out two batters, helping the Seahawks battle back from the late deficit.
With the win, the Seahawks will line up to play 2-seed LIU on Thursday at 3:00 pm.
