Staten Island, NY - The Wagner baseball team prevailed over FDU in game two of the weekend series, 4-2, on Friday at SIUH Community Park. Prior to the game the Seahawks honored their ten seniors.
The Seahawks started strong thanks to a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch from graduate student David Melfi. The Green & White then tacked on two more runs in the fourth by way of RBIs from senior Lukas Torres and freshman Diego Tavarez.
The Knights closed the gap in the fifth with a two-run home run. It was a controversial call as the ball seemed to travel foul, but the home plate umpire ruled it fair, resulting in a 3-2 score as the game headed to the later innings.
Senior Julian Taudin-Chabot was efficient out of the bullpen, earning the win, but it was graduate student Alec Burnett who once again came in for the rare two-inning save.
After cruising through the eighth, the Columbus, IN, native ran walked two batters to crowd the base paths in the ninth. However, a double play turned by senior Cole Kumpf ended the threat, helping to even the series at one game a piece.
With the victory, the Seahawks can get no lower than the 4-seed in the Northeast Conference (NEC) Tournament. With a Merrimack loss and a win in tomorrow's game, Wagner will earn the 3-seed and will play either FDU or CCSU in the opening round on Wednesday. A loss will pit the Seahawks against Delaware State, a team they swept earlier in the season.
First pitch for tomorrow is scheduled for noon.
