Staten Island, NY - The Wagner baseball team dropped its series opener against FDU, 7-4, on Thursday at SIUH Community Park.
A five-run second inning was the most damage inflicted on the Seahawks and it resulted in a one-sided affair for the Knights. Junior Frankie Wright was pulled after 1.2 innings.
After falling behind 6-0, the Green & White received a boost behind back-to-back RBI singles from graduate student David Melfi and senior Chris Conniff. But the Knights kept the Seahawks at bay, yielding just two more runs the rest of the way.
Redshirt senior Xavier Ulrich continued his hot stretch with three hits on the day, but the offense as a whole couldn't get past FDU's pitching.
Freshman Griffin White and senior Nicholas Hanson highlighted a bullpen that allowed just one run across the final 7.1 innings of action. They each allowed no hits and struck out three and two batters, respectively.Â
Wagner will look to get back on track in game two of the three-game set tomorrow at 1:00 pm. Ten seniors will be honored before the game begins.
