Staten Island, NY - Fueled by an eight-run eighth inning, the Wagner baseball team closed out its non-conference slate with a 13-8 victory over Columbia at SIUH Community Park on Tuesday.
The Seahawks were trailing the regular season Ivy League champions, 8-5, with six outs remaining. But the home team put together a huge rally to spearhead a comeback win.
Junior Bryce Phelps got the inning started with an RBI single to make it 8-6. Redshirt senior Xavier Ulrich then continued his hot stretch with a blistering double on the first pitch of the at-bat to score the tying run. Ulrich finished the day recording his fourth straight multi-hit performance.
Two wild pitches scored the ninth and tenth runs for the Green & White before senior Ariv Camacho singled in the sixth run of the inning to make it 11-8. Two more insurance runs were scored off of a throwing error to close out the scoring.
Senior Julian Taudin-Chabot finished the outing with a perfect ninth.
The Seahawks got off the roaring start thanks to the bat of senior Chris Conniff. Conniff blasted a grand slam down the right field line to punctuate a 4-0 start to the game. After Columbia scored a run in the second, junior Albert Serrano earned the run back on a double to left center.
But a big third inning gave the Lions a 6-5 advantage. Two more runs were added in the sixth before Wagner took over the contest. Junior Michael Cunningham earned the win after pitching a scoreless eighth.
Wagner improves to 24-26 and will look to finish the regular season on a high note when it hosts FDU this weekend. Game one of the series is scheduled for a 3:00 pm first pitch on Thursday.
