Brookville, NY - The Wagner baseball team suffered a 21-6 loss at LIU in Sunday's series finale. Despite the defeat, the Seahawks clinched a berth in the 2024 Northeast Conference (NEC) Tournament.
This is the second straight season and second of three seasons under head coach Craig Noto that the Green & White have reached the postseason. A chance at solidifying its case for a top-two seed and first round bye was on the line in Sunday's rubber match.
The offense started off hot, taking an early 3-0 lead. Senior Lukas Torres once again led the game off with a triple before redshirt senior Xavier Ulrich collected his sixth RBI of the weekend on a groundout to the shortstop.
Graduate student David Melfi and senior Ariv Camacho made up the remaining two runs with RBI hits in the second. But the Sharks rattled off ten straight runs to take control of the contest.
Ulrich added two more RBIs in the sixth, but the offense had cooled off from its rapid start.
The Seahawks used eight pitchers on the day, with junior Michael Cunningham shining with a scoreless eighth. He struck out all three batters he faced in the inning.Â
Wagner heads into the final week of the season with a 23-26 overall record and 20-10 record in conference. Its final midweek of the season will be played on Tuesday against Columbia at SIUH Community Park at 4:00 pm.
