Brookville, NY - The Wagner baseball team split its doubleheader at LIU on Saturday, falling in the first game, 8-3, before pulling off a spirited victory in game two, 7-2.
With second place up for grabs, the Seahawks fell to the Sharks after yielding five runs in the first three innings. Redshirt senior Xavier Ulrich produced all the runs in the game, but it wasn't enough as junior Frankie Wright was dealt the loss.
Wagner turned the page in game two as it scored five runs of its own across the first four innings. Ulrich once again led the way with a two-RBI double in the third.
Leadoff hitter senior Lukas Torres got the scoring started before the second batter's at-bat ended, leading off the game with a triple before scoring on a wild pitch. Graduate student David Melfi and junior Albert Serrano also collected RBIs during the early run.
Sophomore Ryan Bilka supplied the defense early on, but ran into trouble towards the end of the fifth. Enter senior Julian Taudin-Chabot, who escaped the bases-loaded jam after an automatic strike was called to end LIU's fifth inning threat.
Holding onto a 5-2 lead, graduate student Alec Burnett entered the fray to secure his sixth save of the season. Freshman Diego Tavarez and senior Chris Conniff added two more runs to help Burnett's case as the veteran cruised to a three strikeout finish.
The crucial series finale takes place tomorrow at 1:00 pm at LIU Baseball Stadium.
