Trenton, NJ - The Wagner baseball team earned a 8-5 victory in Sunday's series finale against Norfolk State at Trenton Thunder Ballpark.
The game came down to one swing as the Spartans nearly broke the game open with the bases loaded in the ninth. But junior Albert Serrano made a leaping catch on the warning track to end the threat.
Serrano was one of three Seahawks (freshman Diego Tavarez, junior Mateo Matthews) to collect two hits on the day, while also joining Tavarez with multiple RBIs.
A four-run third put Wagner in front early as the pitching staff kept Norfolk State at bay.
In a 5-3 game, the Seahawks once again utilized quality at-bats to put pressure on the Spartans, scoring three runs in the sixth to take a commanding 8-3 lead.
A bases-loaded walk to Serrano made it 6-3 before Tavarez scored sophomore Zack Kent on a single to left. Graduate student David Melfi then padded the lead on a sacrifice fly.
After adding a run in the seventh, the Spartans walked in the team's fifth run of the game, but freshman Griffin White came in for the one out save to earn Wagner the series victory.
The much-needed victory kept the Green & White within striking distance of Sacred Heart for the top spot in the Northeast Conference (NEC) standings.
But before taking on Stonehill next weekend, the Seahawks will play in a midweek contest at Iona on Wednesday, April 10. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 pm.
