New Rochelle, NY - The Wagner baseball team scored 12 runs on 15 hits in Wednesday's 12-2 victory over Iona. After being named Northeast Conference (NEC) Co-Rookie of the Week, freshman Diego Tavarez led the Seahawks with four RBIs.
Tavarez singled in junior Mateo Matthews as a part of a three-run third before bringing in another run on a sacrifice fly in the next inning. Tavarez then doubled in two runs in the sixth to give Wagner a 9-0 advantage.
Junior Albert Serrano and freshman Christian Knight also tallied two RBIs apiece.
Errors hurt the Gaels early on as four the first six runs scored by the Seahawks were unearned. Matthews contributed a sacrifice fly in the sixth before Tavarez's ground-rule double scored two. Two more runs via a single up the middle by Knight put the Green & White in front by 11.
After Iona scored two in the seventh, senior Cole Kumpf padded the lead with a single in the eighth.
On the mound, freshman LJ Wolff earned his first career start and victory by hurling three, one-hit innings. Senior Julian Taudin-Chabot followed up Wolff by pitching three no-hit innings.Â
Four members of the Seahawk bullpen pitched the final three innings of the game, allowing a combined six baserunners the rest of the way.
Wagner improved to 14-17 with the convincing win and will return to conference play on Friday at Stonehill. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 pm.
