Baseball Splits Doubleheader With Norfolk State On Saturday

Trenton, NJ - The Wagner baseball team split its doubleheader against Norfolk State on Saturday at Trenton Thunder Ballpark, winning the opening game on a walk-off home run by freshman Diego Tavarez, 4-2, but losing the second contest, 9-7, in extras.

After trailing 2-1 heading into the eighth, senior Lukas Torres tied the game on a single through the right side before Tavarez lifted the Seahawks to victory in the ninth.

Graduate student David Melfi reached base via hit-by-pitch and stole second to put a runner in scoring position. It didn't matter where Melfi was on the basepaths, however, as Tavarez sent a rocket into the scoreboard in right center to put Wagner on top in game one.

Graduate student Alec Burnett picked up the win after delivering a hitless top of the ninth in relief of junior Frankie Wright. Wright was strong in the outing, delivering eight innings of two-run ball with an accompanying five strikeouts.

In game two, starting pitching paved the way early on as junior Connor Hayden got through seven innings on only 65 pitches. But the Spartans began to hit around the Seahawk arms, putting up five runs in the eighth.

A two-run bottom half of the inning made it a 6-4 game, but Norfolk State added to its tally with an insurance run in the ninth. The Green & White were able to piece together a rally to tie the game at seven.

Tavarez singled in the fifth run before Melfi drove in the sixth. A throwing error by the Spartans allowed junior Xavier Baker to round the bases and score the tying run.

After a scoreless tenth, Norfolk State broke through with two runs in the 11th to ultimately take the victory in game two. The Seahawks had bases loaded in the 11th, but couldn't cash in on the opportunity.

The rubber match between the two Northeast Conference (NEC) foes is scheduled for a noon first pitch on Sunday in Trenton.
