Staten Island, NY - The Wagner baseball suffered a 4-3 extra innings loss to Seton Hall on Tuesday night at SIUH Community Park.
It was all Seton Hall early on as the Pirates searched for the season sweep of the Seahawks. The Pirates turned an early 1-0 lead in the first to a 3-0 lead by the fourth.
But senior Julian Taudin-Chabot kept the Pirates off the scoreboard after ceding a run in the fourth. The Cheney, WA, native finished the outing with just one earned run on three hits with six strikeouts across four innings.
With the pitching staff holding down the fort, Wagner's offense came alive in the latter innings.Â
In the fifth, a blistering double off the wall from junior Mateo Matthews put Wagner on the board. Then in the seventh, two runs crossed home plate, highlighted by a game-tying RBI single from freshman Diego Tavarez.
Junior Jake Toporek pitched three scoreless innings in relief as the Seahawks took the Pirates to extras. But an RBI double to the left-center gap in the 11th proved to be the difference as the Green & White dropped to 15-20 on the season.
The Seahawks will shift their focus to their weekend NEC series against Le Moyne in Trenton, NJ. First pitch on Friday is scheduled for 3:00 pm.
