North Easton, MA - The Wagner baseball split its doubleheader on Saturday at Stonehill, losing the first game, 12-3, but bouncing back to secure its 12th Northeast Conference (NEC) victory in game two, 6-5.
Graduate student Alec Burnett shut the door on Stonehill's chances for the sweep in game two, recording a five out save for his fourth save of the year. The save slots Burnett in second on the NEC saves leaderboard behind LIU's Jack VanDoran.
After dropping game one, the Seahawks bounced back early to take a 2-0 lead. A bases-loaded hit-by-pitch brought in the first run before freshman Diego Tavarez drove in the second on a sacrifice fly.Â
Senior Lukas Torres padded the lead in the third with an RBI single.
The Skyhawks threatened in the bottom half of the third, making it a 3-1 game, but Serrano launched a two-run home run in the seventh to give Wagner some cushion.Â
An eighth inning RBI double from freshman Josiah Ross proved crucial as the Skyhawks pieced together three runs in the bottom half of the inning to make it a one run game. But Burnett clinched the save to award Wagner with a split of the doubleheader.
Junior Connor Hayden earned his fourth victory of the year, throwing 6.2 innings of two-run ball.
In game one, the Seahawks trailed the whole way as Stonehill pieced together 14 hits.
Freshman Christian Knight led the offense with three hits and two RBIs. Ross and senior Ariv Camacho also contributed multi-hits in the loss.
The rubber match against the Skyhawks is set for 1:00 pm on Sunday.
