Lexington, VA - The Wagner College men's lacrosse team dropped a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) contest at VMI, 14-10, on Wednesday afternoon.
Wagner jumped out to a 4-1 lead through the first 7:42 of the contest. After CJ Sweitzer opened the scoring, VMI knotted the game at one 36 seconds later. Following the VMI goal, Wagner launched a 3-0 run. Junior's James Rea, Carson Skinner, and Patrick Caldwell all found the back of the net. The Keydets closed the first quarter on a 2-0 run to cut the Wagner lead to 4-3 entering the second quarter.
Sophomore Nico Kross collected his first-career collegiate goal 2:48 into the second quarter to give Wagner a 5-3 lead. After VMI scored back-to-back goals to tie the game at five, James Rea scored a goal to give Wagner a 6-5 lead, VMI tied the game with 1:23 remaining in the second quarter to bring the contest tied at six entering halftime.
The Keydets opened the second half on a 3-0 run to take a 9-6 lead before sophomore Jake Mitchell scored back-to-back goals to cut the deficit to 9-8. VMI closed the third quarter on a 2-0 run to take an 11-8 run into the fourth quarter.
VMI outscored Wagner 4-2 in the fourth quarter to earn the victory.
Jake Mitchell led the way offensively for the Seahawks with two goals and three assists.
Wagner will be back in action on Saturday, April 13 when they welcome Canisius to Hameline Field at 12:00 pm.
