Staten Island, NY - The Wagner College men's lacrosse team picked up its first win of the season with a 9-8 win over Marist in the Seahawks' Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) opener on Saturday afternoon at Hameline Field.
In a back-and-forth opening quarter, the Seahawks outscored the Red Foxes 4-3. After Marist took the lead 99 seconds into the game, the Seahawks launched a 4-1 run to take a 4-2 lead before Marist added a goal late in the frame. Wagner had four different goal scorers in the frame as juniors James Rea, Ethan Sieb, and Patrick Caldwell found the back of the net along with senior Nick Martini.
Marist fought back in the second quarter and outscored Wagner 2-1, sophomore Max Frissora scored the lone goal for Wagner in the second quarter as the game entered the second half knotted at five.
Both teams exchanged one goal in the third quarter, freshman Terry Farrell netted the lone Wagner goal as the game entered the final stanza tied at six.
Wagner opened the fourth quarter on a 3-0 run to push its lead to 9-6. Max Frissora tallied two goals during the run while classmate Smith Callaghan's goal with 5:16 remaining pushed the lead to 9-6.
Marist added two goals to cut the Wagner lead to 9-8, but it wasn't enough, as the Seahawks earned the victory.
Sophomore goalkeeper Rudy Zarate stopped 14 shots in the contest while Frissora tallied a hat trick.
Wagner will be back in action on Tuesday, March 12 when they welcome the University of North Carolina to Hameline Field at 3:00 pm.
