Baseball Opens Conference Play With Doubleheader Sweep At Delaware State

Dover, DE - The Wagner baseball team earned its first two wins of the season on Friday, sweeping the doubleheader at Delaware State and starting Northeast Conference (NEC) play, 2-0. The Seahawks defeated the Hornets, 9-2, in game one and 12-1 in game two.

Senior Chris Conniff got the scoring started on an RBI single in the third, but Delaware State responded in the fourth. The Seahawks broke open the scoring in the sixth thanks to a three-run home run by junior Albert Serrano — his first of his Wagner career.

From there, the pitching staff did its part as the Green & White tacked on the runs.

Sophomore Zack Kent, redshirt senior Xavier Ulrich and graduate student David Melfi joined Serrano and Conniff with RBIs. Junior Andrew Stanley and graduate student Alec Burnett allowed one run on four hits combined the rest of the way.

Junior Frankie Wright earned his first win of the season, pitching five innings of one run ball.

In game two, the Seahawks pounced on Delaware State as junior Connor Hayden produced his best start of the young season. Hayden clinched a quality start, pitching seven innings and allowing just one run on four hits.

After taking a 5-0 lead through the opening four innings, Wagner's six-run sixth made it 11-1.

Junior Mateo Matthews singled in Conniff to start the sixth inning scoring. An RBI walk from senior Ariv Camacho followed before graduate student Henry Martinez and senior Lukas Torres singled in runs.

Overall, the Seahawks combined for 21 runs on 27 hits in the doubleheader.

Wagner will look for the series sweep and a 3-0 start to NEC play on Sunday at 1:00 pm.
