Dover, DE - Freshman Josiah Ross of the Wagner baseball team recorded his first career hit in dramatic fashion on Sunday, scoring the game-winning RBI in the top of the 12th inning to complete the weekend sweep of Delaware State, 4-3.
After a two-run, two-out rally in the eighth inning tied the series finale at three, the Seahawks and Hornets went to extra innings. Wagner's pitching staff shutdown Delaware State's batters, leading to Ross's at-bat with senior Chris Conniff in scoring position.
On a full count, Ross ripped a single into left, allowing Conniff to circle home and put the Seahawks on top for good. Junior Andrew Stanley recorded the final three outs, earning him his first career win with the Green & White.
Wagner once again got the jump on their Northeast Conference (NEC) counterpart. A sacrifice fly from Conniff scored senior Lukas Torres in the top of the first to make it 1-0 early.
But the Hornets responded in the middle innings, taking a 3-1 lead with runs in the fifth and seventh innings. It wasn't until the eighth inning that Wagner regained momentum and tied the game at three.
Freshman Diego Tavarez and junior Mateo Matthews recorded back-to-back RBI singles to extend the game, before Ross ended the contest in extras.
Sophomore Ryan Bilka drew the start, pitching four shutout innings and striking out a career-high seven batters.Â
Conniff and Matthews recorded multiple hits in the victory.
With the win, the Seahawks improve to 3-11 (3-0) on the year and will look to keep the winning ways going in their home opener on Tuesday, March 12, against Saint Peter's. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 pm at SIUH Community Park.
