New Britain, CT - The Wagner baseball team moved to 8-0 in Northeast Conference (NEC) with a doubleheader sweep of CCSU on Friday, earning the series victory. The Seahawks used a three-run ninth to win game one, 3-2, and prevailed 4-1 in game two.
This marks the first time since 2018 that Wagner has won a series versus CCSU.
It was a wild finish to game one as the Seahawks put together a ninth-inning rally. Junior Mateo Matthews drove in two runs to tie the game before a wild pitch scored the eventual game-winning run.Â
Graduate student Alec Burnett shut down the Blue Devils for a 1-2-3 inning, clinching his second save of the week and series opening win over the preseason top team.
Junior Frankie Wright pitched eight strong innings, allowing just one earned run in a quality start.
In game two, the Seahawks once again used a late-inning rally to capture the victory. After the Blue Devils went up 1-0 in the fourth, three runs crossed the plate to make it 3-2. Wagner held onto the lead from then on.
Junior Albert Serrano drove in the game-winning RBI, singling in two runs in the sixth. Another wild pitch from CCSU made it 3-1. The Seahawks threatened again in the eighth, loading the bases. But once again the Blue Devils coughed up a run via wild pitch.
Junior Connor Hayden locked down CCSU, allowing just one run across six innings, earning a second quality start for the Green & White on the day. Junior Andrew Stanley and sophomore Ryan Bilka, who earned the save, allowed just two hits over the final three innings to close out the sweep.
Wagner wins its third straight NEC series to open the season, moving to 8-0. Now 9-13 on the season, the Seahawks will aim to open conference play with three straight sweeps.
Game three of the series is currently scheduled for Saturday, but impending weather could push the game back to Sunday. The game time will be at 1:00 pm regardless of which day the game is played.
