Staten Island, NY - The Wagner baseball team clinched another Northeast Conference (NEC) series victory Saturday at SIUH Community Park, defeating Coppin State, 9-3. The Seahawks moved to 5-0 in conference play for the first time since 2016.
Wagner got major contributions from freshmen Diego Tavarez and Josiah Ross, who both collected three hits on the day. But the stars of the game were junior Mateo Matthews and senior Chris Conniff.
The middle-of-the-order tandem both hit home runs en route to the home victory.
After falling behind 1-0, Matthews launched a no-doubter in the second inning to give Wagner a 2-1 lead. Two innings later, Conniff brought in three runs for his first home run of the season to make it 6-1.
Tavarez, Conniff and sophomore Zack Kent each drove in a run from there as the offense put together a 13-hit display.
Junior Connor Hayden got the job done for his second win of the year. He pitched five innings and allowed three runs on four hits.
Out of the bullpen, junior Andrew Stanley and graduate student Alec Burnett maintained Wagner's lead, combining for four one-hit innings and seven strikeouts.
A Sunday victory versus the Eagles would award the Seahawks a perfect 6-0 start to NEC play — the best start to conference play in program history. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
