Staten Island, NY - The Wagner baseball team completed the weekend sweep of Coppin State on Sunday with a 17-3 at SIUH Community Park. The Seahawks' 6-0 start to Northeast Conference (NEC) play is a program record and beats out the 2016 team's 5-0 start.
The Seahawks are atop the NEC standings with a perfect 6-0 record and remain the only unbeaten team in conference play.
Head coach Craig Noto's unit got the program-record behind strong plate discipline. The Seahawks got on base at a rapid pace, reaching via walk on 14 occasions. Particularly in the sixth inning, Coppin State walked in three runs and hit another batter to score a fourth.
Overall in the sixth, the Green & White scored nine runs to firmly distance themselves from the Eagles. Junior Albert Serrano got one of three hits during the inning, singling in two runners on a batted ball through the left side.Â
Prior to that, freshman Connor Roche got the scoring started on a single up the middle in the second. Trailing 1-0 at the time, Roche recorded his first of three hits to tie the game at one. The Seahawks never trailed from then on.
Senior Chris Conniff continued his impressive series with a two-RBI single in the fifth to give Wagner a 3-1 lead. Senior Lukas Torres padded that lead with an RBI triple to right center in the next at-bat. The wheels fell off for Coppin State in the next inning, cementing the victory.
Sophomore Zack Kent joined Roche as players with multiple hits.
Freshman Ryan Bilka drew the start and allowed just two hits through three innings of work. Senior Nicholas Hanson earned the win thanks to three strong innings in middle relief. Hanson pitched three innings and struck out four batters without allowing a run.
Freshmen Matthew Moconoyi and Keith Davis allowed one hit each and no runs in their one-inning long relief appearances.
The Seahawks will play their fifth home game of the week on Tuesday when they host Iona at SIUH Community Park. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 pm.
