Staten Island, NY - The Wagner baseball team moved to 2-0 at home and 4-0 in Northeast Conference (NEC) play with a 14-8 victory to open its weekend series against Coppin State at SIUH Community Park on Friday.
The Seahawks piled on 14 runs on the Eagles, but were spearheaded by a vintage performance from junior Frankie Wright. In his second win of the season, Wright delivered seven innings of one-run ball, allowing just six hits and striking out four.
Junior Albert Serrano got the scoring started in the first with a two-RBI single to center field. While Coppin State responded by tacking on a run in the second, the Seahawks would outscore the Eagles, 12-0, until the ninth inning.
Junior Mateo Matthews and senior Lukas Torres both recorded RBI singles in the fifth and sixth innings, respectively, before the Green & White scored five runs in the seventh.
A sacrifice fly from sophomore Zack Kent was followed by an RBI single from senior Chris Conniff. Then, redshirt senior Xavier Ulrich cleared the bases on a double to cap off the five-run inning.
Wagner remains unbeaten at home and in conference play and will draw Coppin State once again in game two of the weekend series on Saturday. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 pm.
