Staten Island, NY - Senior Lukas Torres of the Wagner baseball team clinched a walk-off victory on Tuesday afternoon as a part of three-run, ninth inning rally to defeat Saint Peter's, 10-9, at SIUH Community Park.
After junior Mateo Matthews tied the game on a double down the right field line, Torres stepped up to the plate with the bases loaded. The Barnegat, NJ, native singled into shallow center, allowing Matthews to trot home and clinch the win in the team's home opener.
The Seahawks entered the seventh down 9-6 after leading 6-3 late. Senior Chris Conniff got the rally going with an RBI single in the inning, before Matthews and Torres played hero ball.
Freshman Keith Davis earned the win, while Drew DelCollo received the loss after giving up all three runs in the final inning.
The Green & White looked well on their way to a fourth straight victory after taking a 6-3 lead into the middle innings. A two-run opposite field home run by freshman Connor Roche extended the lead in the fifth inning, but the Peacocks tagged Wagner's bullpen for six runs across the sixth and seventh innings.
From there, Wagner threatened each inning before ultimately pulling off the win in the ninth.
Roche, Matthews, Conniff and sophomore Zack Kent all had two hits a piece. Freshman Josiah Ross reached base via walk five times and another by a hit-by-pitch. He scored three runs.
The Seahawks have a quick turnaround for another midweek contest, this time on the road in Bronx, NY, at Fordham on Wednesday. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 pm.
