Staten Island, NY - The Wagner College women's basketball team fell to Saint Francis U, 75-60, on Thursday evening at the Spiro Sports Center.
Graduate student Taleah Washington led the Green & White with 17 points. Junior
Rakisha Ballinger added 15 of her own, while freshman
Kiera Edmonds' ten points wrapped up the double-digit scorers for the Seahawks.
Washington and junior Semie Brar had Wagner going early, with Washington scoring five first quarter points alongside Brar's team-leading six. Washington ended the first period on a buzzer-beating layup to make it a 16-13 game at the end of the first quarter.
Washington continued to provide offense for the Seahawks, tying the contest at 21 with 2:55 gone by in the second quarter. But an 11-0 run by the Red Flash through the midway point of the period shaped the game in the visitor's favor.
Trailing 34-26 at halftime, Wagner came out of the intermission with a new energy by way of freshman Drew Jordon. But Jordon's quick five points couldn't combat the six made three-pointers by the Red Flash in the quarter.
Facing a 54-39 deficit entering the fourth quarter, the Seahawks, after trailing by as much as 19, responded with a 12-3 run spearheaded by Ballinger and Washington to cut it to ten. But Saint Francis U once again quieted the home team's comeback bid.
Saint Francis U improved to 5-19 (4-7) with the win, while also clinching the season sweep against the Seahawks.
The Seahawks will hit the road for their next matchup at Sacred Heart on Saturday, February 17. tip-off is scheduled for 2:00 pm.
