Box Score Staten Island, NY - The Wagner women's basketball team (2-9, 0-0 NEC) fell to IVY League member Columbia (8-4, 0-0 IVY), 77-53, Saturday afternoon at the Spiro Sports Center.
Graduate student Taleah Washington made her season debut, leading the Seahawks with 15 points (4-of-11 FG, 2-of-5 3FG) along with seven assists. Graduate student
Julia Fabozzi added 11 points and four rebounds while freshman
Keana Foz chipped in nine points.
In the opening frame, Columbia jumped out to an early 7-0 lead. Washington then checked into the game and immediately knocked down a three-pointer. The Seahawks started to gain momentum and took the lead, 17-16, with 34 seconds left in the quarter. Washington did not miss a shot in the first quarter (3-of-3 FG, 2-of-2 3FG, 5-of-5 FT) for 13 points as the Green & White led by one at the end of the period.
The Lions opened the second quarter with a 9-0 run before junior Angelie Ricard put an end to the run with a layup with 7:15 remaining. Columbia continued to grow their lead and were up by seven, 37-30, at the break.
In the second half, Columbia resumed their dominance outscoring the Seahawks 40-23 en route to a 77-53 victory.
The Lions outrebounded the Seahawks 54 to 26 including 18 offensive rebounds for 14 second chance points.
Wagner is back in action after the holiday break on Monday, December 30 against SUNY Old Westbury at 2 PM. Following the matchup against the Panthers, the Seahawks will begin Northeast Conference (NEC) action on Thursday, January 2 against Chicago State.
