Guadalajara, Mexico - Freshman Sofia Lopez Meneses of the Wagner women's fencing team will be competing in nationals (Juegos CONADE) on June 1 after she qualified for the event in Querétaro, Mexico in April.
This is the sixth year Lopez Meneses has qualified for nationals. She placed in the top-eight in the qualifying rounds for the junior (U-20) age division, which gave her the opportunity to advance to nationals in Guadalajara, Jalisco.
"I'm very proud of Sofi's performance at this important event for her," head coach David Sierra said. "She worked hard to prepare for it after the conclusion of the NCAA season and went into it very well prepared."
"This competition is important for me because it gives me the opportunity to keep my ranking as a top fencer in Mexico," Lopez Meneses said.
Lopez Meneses is an épée competitor and will look to further her standing in Mexico when she competes tomorrow. She had a solid introduction to collegiate action this season on Grymes Hill, capping off her freshman campaign as one of six Wagner competitors to qualify for the NCAA Mid-Atlantic/South Regionals.
