Chestnut Hill, MA - The Wagner fencing program wrapped up its fall season at the Northeast Fencing Conference Varsity Meet, hosted by Boston College, on Sunday.
The women led the way with a 4-4 record at the event, while the men compiled an 0-6 mark.
The Seahawks dropped their first two matchups to Brown and MIT, but rebounded with a pair of 16-11 victories over Sacred Heart and Wellesley. The épée squad of freshman Natalja Stiller, sophomore Sofia Lopez Meneses and junior Katerina Cervenkova won 8-1 in round three.
Against Wellesley, two 5-4 losses were erased by an 8-1 victory for the sabre squad. Freshman Natalia Mendez Molina and sophomore Fanny Straub each went 3-0.
The women then traded wins and losses throughout the final four bouts to finish at .500.
Freshman Renata Ziganova paced the women's team with a 17-7 overall record. Stiller and Straub each went 16-8, while Cervenkova and Lopez Meneses eclipsed the decade mark with ten victories each.
For the men, the losses were narrow as they lost their first three competitions versus Brown, MIT and Sacred Heart by a combined seven victories. The group then suffered another close loss to Vassar, 14-13, to end their day.
Freshmen Flavio Vinci and Ismael Chavez led the way with 14 and 13 wins, respectively. Junior Atticus Bliss also reached the ten-win benchmark with a 10-5 overall record. Freshman Isaac Oden impressed with a 90 winning percentage.
Vinci, Chavez and Bliss were also named Northeast Fencing Conference (NFC) All-Stars for their respective performances. Vinci was named NFC Men's Sabre First Team, while Chavez was named NFC Men's Épée First Team. Bliss made the NFC Men's Épée Second Team.
