Norfolk, VA - The Wagner baseball team worked cohesively on Saturday to pick up its second win of the weekend against Norfolk State. The offense provided 14 runs while the pitching staff allowed two runs to cross the plate.
For the offense it was a quick start to the contest. Senior DiMaggio Cazares roped a two-RBI single to left center before seniors Griffin Selby and Dante Faicchio scored runs on sacrifice flies.
The next inning saw senior Cody Bey produce on a double down the left field line. Cazares then added to his RBI total with another two-run single before senior David Melfi broke the game open with a two-run home run to right center.
Leading 9-0 the offense continued to produce as the pitching staff shut down the Spartans.
Sophomore Frankie Wright earned the win by pitching five shutout innings. He allowed just two hits and struck out six batters.
In relief it was graduate student John LaPointe and senior Jagger Duquette who kept the shutout going with a combined three hits allowed in two innings. They both struck out two Spartans.
Freshmen Will Saxenmeyer and Jason Masick coughed up the lone runs in the eighth and ninth innings, but still limited the damage by allowing just three hits combined.
Wagner will finish its series against Norfolk State on Sunday at noon.
