North Andover, MA - The Wagner baseball team secured the win against Merrimack on Saturday to clinch its fourth Northeast Conference (NEC) series victory. Junior Chris Conniff drove in the game-winning run in the eighth inning.
Saturday saw a back and forth affair with the Seahawks striking first.
Senior DiMaggio Cazares continued his hot hitting against Merrimack with his second home run of the series. The solo shot put Wagner ahead 1-0, but the Warriors responded with two runs in the next half inning.
In the fourth inning Wagner reclaimed the lead thanks to a three-run blast from senior Maimu Kobayashi. The Warriors had taken a 3-1 lead prior to Kobayashi's home run.
From there the teams traded runs. Merrimack tied it up in the bottom of the fifth before sophomore Mateo Matthews retook the lead on a single in the sixth. Merrimack tied it up once again in the seventh.Â
Conniff finally broke the trend with an opposite field single to score sophomore Xavier Baker in the eighth inning. The pitching staff did the rest as graduate student Alec Burnett and junior Nicholas Hanson threw three no-hit innings to close out the contest.
Burnett picked up the win and Hanson earned the save as Wagner won the weekend series.Â
The Seahawks will return home for their next matchup against Iona on Tuesday, April 11 at 3:30 pm.
