Staten Island, NY - Five pitchers on the Wagner baseball team pitched a combined shutout in Tuesday's matchup against Iona. The team won 9-0 to clinch its second shutout of the season.
Junior Julian Taudin-Chabot drew the start and instantly got some run support. Senior DiMaggio Cazares drove in the first run on a fielder's choice. Cazares then stole second, which resulted in senior Cody Bey scoring from third.
In the next inning, junior Chris Conniff hit a solo shot to right center to put Wagner ahead, 3-0.
Freshman Will Saxenmeyer took the mound next. He earned the win thanks to a huge five-run third from the offense.
Sophomore Xavier Baker singled in fellow sophomore Mateo Matthews before Conniff struck again with the long ball. With the bases loaded, Conniff belted the team's first grand slam of the season to the same spot he hit his home run in the second.
Conniff finished the day 3-4 with five RBIs.Â
Next out of the bullpen came freshman Jason Masick who continued to keep the Gaels off the scoreboard. Freshman Andrew Rucci followed up Masick with two strong innings before sophomore Michael Cunningham finished off Iona in the ninth.
The Seahawks have now matched their win total from last season and will look to surpass that mark as soon as Friday, April 14 at 3:00 pm against UMES.
