Baseball Uses Pair Of Sixth Inning Rallies To Sweep Doubleheader Versus Sacred Heart

Bridgeport, CT - The Wagner baseball team used two sixth inning rallies to pull off the doubleheader sweep against Sacred Heart on Friday. With the pair of victories the Seahawks moved within half a game of second place in the Northeast Conference (NEC) standings.

The sixth inning was kind to the Seahawks as they combined for ten runs in the inning across the doubleheader fixture.

In Game 1, after homering in the second inning, senior Dante Faicchio added to his RBI total with a two-run single up the middle to take back the lead.

The runs didn't stop there as junior Ariv Camacho doubled down the left field line to make it a 4-2 game. Junior Chris Conniff padded the lead with a sacrifice fly before Camacho circled the diamond thanks to Sacred Heart's second error of the game.

Sophomore Connor Hayden fell an out short of his third quality start in four appearances, but he was crucial to Wagner's victory as he recorded a career-high nine strikeouts. Hayden moved to 6-0 on the year.

The Pioneers made a late run, but junior Nicholas Hanson secured his sixth save of the campaign as he struck out the final batter.

In Game 2 it was once again the sixth inning that was key to the Seahawks' success. They pieced together five runs in the frame to break a 4-4 tie and take control of the game.

Two bases-loaded walks from Conniff and senior Cody Bey gave Wagner a two-run lead before senior Griffin Selby doubled the lead with a two-RBI single. Sacred Heart's seventh error of the day then allowed Bey to cross home plate, making it a 9-4 game.

The hot-hitting continued in the seventh inning as sophomore Mateo Matthews and senior DiMaggio Cazares each hit home runs. What was once a tie game an inning earlier was suddenly a ten-run game in Wagner's favor.

On the mound freshman Ryan Bilka shined en route to the win. He pitched six scoreless innings in relief and struck out five Pioneer batters.

The Seahawks will be searching for the series sweep in Saturday's series finale.
