Staten Island, NY - Over the weekend, the Wagner men's and women's track & field teams completed the 57th annual Colonial Relays, which saw 38 teams competing against one another at Zable Stadium hosted by the College of William & Mary.
The men's team finished the meet in fifth place, totaling a score of 56.5 over 24 events.Â
On the track, junior Anthony Bentivegna once again carved his name into the Wagner College Track & Field history books by running the 10,000 meter run faster than any other athlete ever has from Grymes Hill. Bentivegna crossed the finish line second in 29:54.60, right behind him was senior Jean Uminski.Â
Â
This is Bentivegna second school record. A year ago at the Colonial Relays, Bentivegna ran the fastest 5000m run in Wagner track & field history, with a time of 14:29.72.
Uminski finished the event in third with a time of 30:10.87. Uminski clocked a fast enough time that he would have been the Wagner College record holder in the 10,000 meter run, without Bentivegna in front of him.
Junior Jason Marchese crossed the 400 meter hurdles in 54.03, which earned third place. Marchese continues his consistent play, he finished second in the 400 meter dash last week at the Monmouth Invite.Â
The only Seahawk to win an event at the Colonial Relays was senior Dominic Palermo. Palermo stood alone atop 38 other competitors and brought home the gold in the 3,000 meter steeplechase, with a time of 9:02.38.
In the field, Wagner found themselves with multiple top five finishes. Sophomore Kharlin Watkins tied for fourth in the high jump, finishing at a height of 1.98 meters.Â
Freshman Julio Martinez tied for third in the pole vault, reeling in 5.5 points for the Seahawks at a height of 4.55 meters.
The Green & White were not done altering the record books. On his fifth attempt, Junior Ryan Lane reached a mark of 7.22 meters in the long jump; this mark placed him as the program's all-time leader in the long jump. Lane's jump broke Devon Jones' record that stood for five seasons.Â
Â
On the women's side of competition, the team of freshman Sandra Capani, junior Sofia Garcia, freshman Angelina Olah, and junior Ana Blanco Duran finished the 1600 sprint medley fifth overall with a time of 4:17.08.Â
The Wagner women's track & field team had multiple top 15 event finishes.Â
Ana Blanco Duran finished thirteenth in the 1,500 meter run, sophomore Ruth-Ann Chambers placed fifteenth in the 400 meter hurdles, and sophomore Gia Comerford earned the best women's finish with twelfth place in the 3,000 meter steeplechase.Â
The women's team finished the meet in thirtieth place, totaling a score of 4.
Next up, both men's and women's track & field teams will compete at the Metropolitan Championships at the Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex this Friday, April 7th.Â
