Staten Island, NY - The Wagner baseball team improved to 18-13 on Friday with an 8-3 victory over Maryland-Eastern Shore. The win helped the Seahawks surpass their 2022 total.
The Seahawks were in a 3-1 hole until the sixth inning onward when the team rallied to score seven runs across three innings.Â
After Wagner scored twice in the sixth to tie it up, senior Maimu Kobayashi gave the Seahawks their first lead since the second inning with a home run to left field.Â
Junior Chris Conniff and senior David Melfi reached base thereafter, leading to senior Cody Bey cementing the lead with a two-RBI single.Â
Conniff and Melfi padded the lead in the eighth inning to put Wagner ahead for good.
While the offense burst onto the scene late, it was the pitching tandem of sophomore Connor Hayden and junior Nicholas Hanson that kept the Hawks in check.
Hayden drew the start and earned his second quality start in three appearances. Through seven innings of work, Hayden allowed six hits and three runs while striking out four.Â
The sophomore moved to 5-0 with the win today.
Hanson relieved Hayden in the eighth and worked through two no-hit innings to earn his fifth save of the season.
Wagner will draw Maryland-Eastern Shore once again on Saturday for game two of the three-game set. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 pm.
