Brooklyn, NY - The Wagner fencing program competed in the LIU Invitational to cap off its regular season on Sunday.
In the event, the Seahawks earned one victory across two matchups.
First against Lafayette, Wagner avenged a loss from earlier in the season.
The 15-12 victory was in large part due to 3-0 showings by freshman Sofia Lopez Meneses and Cervenkova in the épée competition.
A loss in the foil bouts and a slim victory in the sabre gave way to a dominant 7-2 victory in the épée — a crucial margin with three-points separating the two programs.Â
Second against LIU the Seahawks fell 16-11. It was a tight loss against the Sharks as Wagner held up well in the épée and sabre bouts, but lost its way in the foil competition.
In the sabre, freshman Fanny Straub and sophomore Simona Nedyalkova each went 2-1 to push the Seahawks to a 5-4 victory. In the épée, despite falling short 5-4, sophomore Katerina Cervenkova had a solid performance. She had a 2-1 showing against the Sharks, including a narrow defeat against two-time All-American Laura Fekete in the final leg of the competition.
The fencing program also had a one-on-one matchup against Fairleigh Dickinson on Friday. The team posted a 19-7 overall victory with a loss in the foil competition 5-3, but wins in the sabre (8-1) and épée (8-1) bouts.
Next up for the Seahawks is the NIWFA Championships on March 4 and March 11.
It will go up against Drew University next weekend before taking part in the regionals the following weekend.
