Staten Island, NY – The Wagner College women's lacrosse team will begin the 2023 season at Hameline Field on Wednesday night when they welcome Drexel at 6:00 pm.
NEC Preseason Favorites
The Seahawks were tabbed Northeast Conference (NEC) preseason favorites on February 1.
The Green & White have made an appearance in the top-2 of the NEC preseason poll for the ninth consecutive season and Wagner has claimed the top spot for the first time since 2019.
Wagner will look to return to the NEC title game after falling to the eventual champion and former NEC foe Mount St. Mary's in the semifinals last season. Prior to falling in the semifinals, Wagner appeared in every NEC title game since 2014.
Wagner received four first-place votes along with LIU, who claimed the second spot in the poll.
The Returners
The Seahawks return six players who made at least 10 starts last season in graduate student's
Lauren DiStefano and
Aileen Hannan, senior's
Casey Haas and
Megan Greco and sophomores
Angelina Skowronski and
Katie Siverson.
Haas, DiStefano, Skowronski and Hannan all received NEC individual honors last season as Haas and DiStefano earned All-NEC Second Team honors.
Skowronski received All-Rookie honors while Hannan earned First Team honors and was named Defensive Player of the Year.
The Newcomers
Under second-year head coach
Kelly McPartland, the Seahawks welcomed eight newcomers to the 2023 team in six freshmen and two graduate student transfers.
The freshmen include
Promise Morgan,
Kristina Pisano,
Mia Williams,
Emily Ryan,
Shae McGinty and
Erin Rooney.
The graduate student transfers include
Nia Scott and
Gianna Skowronski.
The Schedule
Wagner will play eight games at Hameline Field, including four non-conference games before its first home NEC contest against LIU on March 29.
Wagner's conference slate is set to begin on March 18 at CCSU.
Recapping 2022
The Seahawks ended 2022 with an 8-10 overall record and a 6-2 NEC mark. Wagner ended the regular season with three-straight conference wins heading into the playoffs.
Wagner's defense caused the 15th-most turnovers in NCAA Division I while holding conference opponents to 8.0 points per game. The defense was anchored by
Aileen Hannan as the Rockville, MD native wreaked havoc on opposing attacking lines last season, causing a league-best 39 turnovers to rank eighth in the nation.
Wagner led the conference with 169 caused turnovers, 319 ground balls and 18.76 ground balls per game last season
About Drexel
The Dragons enter Hameline Field with a 1-0 record after handling Binghamton 17-5 on February 11.
Drexel was picked third in the CAA preseason poll as seniors Corinne Bednarik and Belle McHugh were named to the preseason All-Conference.
