Baseball Drops Series Finale At Central Connecticut On Sunday Afternoon

New Britain, CT - The Wagner baseball team fell in the weekend series finale to the defending Northeast Conference (NEC), Central Connecticut, 9-1, on Sunday afternoon. 

Wagner (13-31; 9-12 NEC) was paced by Lukas Torres, who went 2 for 4 on the afternoon. Cody Bey, Mike Ruggiero, and Dante Faicchio each had a hit with Bey driving in the Seahawks' lone RBI of the contest. 

Daniel Merkel (0-8) was tagged with the loss after giving up five runs (three earned) on three hits in 1.1 innings. Connor Hayden tossed 3.1 innings in relief of Merkel, allowing three runs (one earned) on four hits. Nick DeCarlo and Ruben Del Castillo combined for 2.1 scoreless innings with DeCarlo striking out a pair of batters. 

Dan Covino and Tyle Fote each had three hits for the Blue Devils (24-13; 14-7 NEC) while Jay Devito and Joe Rios each drove in two RBIs. Anthony Mozzicato (7-3) gave up one run on five hits over seven innings of work in posting his seventh win of the season. Tim Buckek finished the game with two scoreless innings of work. 

The Blue Devils scored the game's first run in their half of the first. Hunter Pasqualini led off with a walk before Devito was hit by a pitch. With two outs, Devito stole second and Pasqualini came into score on an error by Mike Ruggiero at short, giving CCSU an early 1-0 lead. 

Central Connecticut erupted for four runs in the bottom of the second building a 5-0 lead. Fote led off with a single to center before Kyle Gordon was reached after being hit by a pitch. Rios reached on a fielder's choice while Gordon moved to second on a mishap by Bey over at second that allowed Fote to score the Blue Devils' second run of the contest.  A one-out walk to Pasqualini gave the home team a pair of runners on before Devito ripped a single to left, bringing them both in as the lead extended to four. The next batter, Covino, doubled down the left-field line to bring in Paqualini to make it a five-run lead. 

Following a scoreless third and fourth innings, the Blue Devils tacked on three more runs in the bottom of the fifth, increasing its lead to 8-0. Fote singled to start the three-run inning before Gordon doubled to move both runners into scoring position. 

Rios lofted a deep fly to right as Fote tagged up and came into score. Two batters later, Devito reached on a fielding error by Ruggiero at short as Gordon crossed the plate to make it 7-0 before the Seahawks went to the bullpen. DeCarlo came in and issued a walk to Covino that loaded the bases before a second straight free pass was issued to Noah Martinez, which gave the Blue Devils an 8-0. 

The Seahawks got on the board in the top of the sixth. Faicchio ripped a one-out double to left before Griffin Selby walked, giving the visitors two men on. The next batter, Bey, laced a single to left field that brought in Faicchio.

In the bottom of the eighth, CCSU added their final run of the contest as Rios doubled down the right-field line that brought in Mike Torniero to make it 9-1. 

The Seahawks will be back in action this upcoming weekend as Wagner returns to ShoreTown Ballpark in Lakewood, NJ when they welcome the Mount St. Mary's Mountaineers for a three-game set, beginning on May 13.
