Seahawks Take Series Opener, 11-5, On Friday Over Mount St. Mary's

Lakewood, NJ - The weather couldn't derail the Wagner baseball team's offense, as the Seahawks opened their final Northeast Conference (NEC) homestand on Friday with an 11-5 win over Mount St. Mary's at ShoreTown Ballpark.

Wagner (14-31; 10-12 NEC) had five players finish with multi-hit games, led by fifth-year Seahawk Mike Ruggiero, who paced the team with a career-high four hits in five trips to the plate while the Smithtown, NY native drove in three RBIs in the victory.

Cody Bey had three hits in five chances while driving in a pair of runs. Dante Faicchio, Maimu Kobayashi, and Lukas Torres also added two hits with Faicchio and Quinn Mimnaugh matching Bey with two RBIs.

First-year right-hander Frankie Wright (6-4) allowed two runs on four hits while walking one and striking out three over his six strong innings of work in picking up his team-leading sixth win of the season.

Jagger Duquette worked a scoreless seventh, giving up a hit and striking out one. Michael Cunningham gave up three runs on a hit while walking three before John LaPointe was able to preserve the win for Wright, tossing an unblemished ninth, walking one, and striking out.

Shane Wockley had two hits for the Mountaineers (12-31; 5-17 NEC) while Efrain Correa Jr. drove in two of the Mount's five RBIs on the afternoon.

Steve Schenning (2-4) was saddled with the loss after allowing eight runs on 11 hits over 5.1 innings of work. Max Moore didn't allow a run in his short two-thirds of an inning in relief of Schenning. Ryan Florio gave up three runs on four hits in his two innings of work.

The Green & White plated two runs in their half of the first in taking the early lead. Kobayashi led off the contest with a single through the right side before moving into scoring position on a wild pitch from Schenning. He would move over to third after Ruggiero grounded out to second.

Faicchio ripped a double down the left-field line that brought in Kobayashi for the game's first run.

With two outs, Bey sent a 0-1 single to center field, as Faicchio came in from second to give Wagner a two-run advantage.

In the second, the Seahawks added two more in building a four-run lead. Torres kick-started the frame with a single to center before stealing second. David Melfi drew a seven-pitch walk.

With one out, Kobayashi flew out to center, which allowed Torres to tag up from third and score the Seahawks' third run.

Following Melfi swiping second, Ruggiero laced a hard-hit double to center that brought in the veteran catcher as Wagner increased the lead to 4-0.

Mount cut the deficit in half in the third. Wockley led the charge with a solo home run to right-center field that gave the visitors their first hit and runs of the ballgame. Two batters later, Tyler Long, singled up the middle to bring in Ryan Fisher from second making it 4-2.

Wagner staged a four-run bottom of the sixth to increase the lead to 8-2. On the first pitch of the inning, Bey crushed a solo home run to left field, as the Seahawks went up by three, 5-2.

AJ Vigliotti followed with a single to left before Torres was hit by a pitch. Melfi reached on a bunt single to load the bases. Down in the count, Mimnaugh singled but was out trying to extend it to a double but was able to bring home both Torres and Vigliotti pushing the lead to 7-2.

Ruggiero added another hit to his ledger, singling to left as Melf scored to make it 8-2.

In the bottom of the seventh, Torres singled to left-center which brought in Selby as Wagner went up 9-2.

The Mountaineers answered with three runs off Cunningham in the eighth on just one hit. Three straight walks loaded the bases for Drawbaugh, who lofted a sacrifice fly to the right as Long scored. Two batters later, Correa sent a first-pitch single to left-center that brought in a pair, narrowing the deficit to four, 9-5.

Wagner notched two more scores in the bottom of the eighth in taking a six-run lead, 11-5. Kobayashi doubled down the left-field line before Ruggiero recorded his fourth hit of the game, an RBI single to second that scored the Green & White's tenth run.

Faicchio doubled down the left-field line to bring in Ruggiero which increased the lead to 11-5.

LaPointe came in for Cunningham and got Jason Rivera to fly out to right before retiring the final two batters via strikeout.

The series continues tomorrow afternoon with first pitch set for 1:00 p.m.
