Baseball Returns Home To Staten Island With 7-4 Victory Over St. John's On Senior Day

Staten Island, NY - Playing a true home contest for the first time in nearly three years, the Wagner baseball team earned a 7-4 come-from-behind victory over St. John's on Tuesday afternoon at SIUH Community Park.

Before the start of today's contest, the Seahawks recognized its 2022 Senior Class - Josh Casado, John LaPointe, Brandon Demma, and Quinn Mimnaugh.

Graduate right-hander Mike Pirrotta toed the rubber one final time for Wagner (16-32), as he got the game started and left to a standing ovation from his teammates and the Seahawk faithful in attendance.

Right-hander Nick DeCarlo came on and throw 3.1 innings in relief of Pirrotta, giving up three runs on three hits to go along with five walks and recording four strikeouts.

Ruben Del Castillo (3-1) worked 2.1 scoreless frames in relief of DeCarlo, as he walked four and struck out two batters while surrendering just the one hit. Zach Gorman posted a strikeout in his third of an inning before John LaPointe came on for the save after working a scoreless seventh inning, striking out one, walking one, and allowing a hit.

Cody Bey was the lone Seahawk with a multi-hit day, going 2 for 3 with two runs scored while driving in an RBI. Maimu Kobayashi went 1 for 2 while plating home a pair of RBIs as did pinch-hitter Brandon Glowacki, who tied the game at the bottom of the fourth before Kobayashi gave Wagner the lead.

Joe Mascio earned the start for the Red Storm (22-29-1), going three innings while giving up two runs on three hits and striking out two batters. Geoff Mosseau (1-2) surrendered four runs on three hits in taking the loss for the visitors. Jackson Tucker led the way for SJU, going 3 for 4 at the bat with a run scored. Tate Ballestero went 1 for 1 with an RBI and three walks. Paul Orbon scored a run and matched Ballestero in drawing three walks. Austin Machado and Colin Wetterau were credited with St. John's other RBIs on the afternoon.

St. John's jumped out to an early 3-0 lead. DeCarlo got David Glancy to foul out to Griffin Selby at first. Tucker moved into scoring position with a steal of second before Ballestero drew a walk.  DeCarlo was able to get Nick Cirelli to fly out to Lukas Torres in left before three straight walks plated across the first two St. John's runs. A wild pitch during Wettreau's at-bat made it a three-run contest.

Wagner wasted little time in chipping into the lead, scoring twice in the bottom of the second. Mike Ruggiero sent a one-out single to left before Bey tripled to the deepest part of SIUH Community Park to bring in Ruggiero for Wagner's first run of the day.

Mimnaugh was able to leg out an infield single to short as Bey was able to cross the plate without a throw that cut the deficit to one, 3-2.

The visitors doubled up their lead, 4-2, as Ballestero singled to left field that scored Chris Conniff from second base.

The Seahawks posted a four-spot in the bottom of the inning in taking a 6-4 lead. Mosseau came on for St. John's and retired the first two batters he faced. Bey stepped in and singled to left. Mimnaugh was hit by a pitch before David Melfi reached on an infield single to short to load the bases.

Coach Craig Noto elected for a pinch-hitter as Brandon Glowacki stepped in for Xavier Baker and ripped the first pitch he saw to left, clearing the bases with a double as the Seahawks tied the game at 4-4 and concluding Mosseau's afternoon.

Ben Adams came on and gave up the go-ahead runs, as Kobayashi rocketed sent a double down the right-field line that scored both Glowacki and Melfi but Kobayashi was thrown out trying to extend the double into a triple.

In the bottom of the fifth, Wagner added one more score, as Selby singled through the right side that plated home Torres, who started the frame with a four-pitch walk.

St. John's threatened in the top of the sixth as Conniff walked before Melfi fired a strike to second as Ruggiero was there to make the tag of Conniff for the second out.

A walk to Glancy and Ballestero gave the Red Storm a pair of runners on but Zach Gorman came on and struck out Cirelli looking to end the threat.

The Red Storm got the first two men on base with a walk by Paul Orbon and a single by Machado. LaPointe was able to settle back in and got the next two outs via a flyout and a pop-out. Conniff was SJU's last chance but struck out swinging as Wagner earned their 11th victory in program history over St. John's and closes out their home slate.

The Seahawks are still alive in the Northeast Conference (NEC) Tournament, as with three games to go, Wagner will be scorebook watching to see what FDU does this weekend. LIU (16-8 NEC; 31-17), Bryant (15-9 NEC; 25-23), and defending league champions, Central Connecticut (14-10; 24-16) have already clinched tournament berths. FDU is next at 13-11 in the league (21-28) and then Wagner at 11-13 (15-32). Merrimack is currently between the two teams but ineligible for the postseason due to NCAA Reclassification.

Wagner heads to Smithfield, RI beginning on Thursday to tangle with the Bulldogs while the Knights will host Sacred Heart.
