Baseball Rallies In The Ninth But Falls On Walk-Off Double To Bryant, 9-8, On Friday

Smithfield, RI - Trailing 7-4 heading into the top of the ninth, the Wagner baseball team scored four times, highlighted by a go-ahead three-run home run from Dante Faicchio, but the Bryant University Bulldogs rallied in the bottom half of the inning, walking off with 9-8 victory on Thursday afternoon. 
 
With the loss, the Seahawks fall to 16-33 overall and 11-14 in Northeast Conference (NEC) play while the Bulldogs move to 26-24 and 16-9 in league play.

  • Today's setback by the Green & White ended their playoff push as Fairleigh Dickinson secured the final playoff with a 12-5 home win over Sacred Heart. 
  • Bryant remains one game out of the No.1 seed, currently occupied by LIU, who moved to 17-8 after their 9-8 road win at Mount St. Mary's.
 
Four Seahawks had multi-hit games on the afternoon, led by Maimu Kobayashi, who went 3 for 5 with two runs scored while driving in a rub. Mike Ruggiero, Griffin Selby, and Cody Bey each added two hits and an RBI apiece. Faicchio clubbed his team-leading 12th home run of the season for his lone hit of the day while scoring two runs and driving in four RBIs, upping his season total to 52. 

Frankie Wright went allowed five runs (four earned) on four hits over 5.1 innings of work while issuing four walks and striking out three batters. Jagger Duquette worked 2.2 innings, surrendering two unearned runs on three hits. Nick LePre (0-1) gave up the game-tying and winning runs in the bottom of the ninth. 

Derek Smith drove in the game-tying run in the bottom of the ninth before teammate Carmine Petosa brought him in with the game-winning double to left-center as each finished with two hits and two RBIs. Randy Carlo drove in three of Bryant's eight RBIs. 

Collin Lowe gave up four runs (three earned) on six hits while striking out a game-high six batters while not factoring in the decision. Christian Allegretti (4-2) earned his fourth win of the season, going four innings, giving up four runs on five hits while striking out four batters. 

Following a scoreless first inning, Bryant got on the board first as Carmine Petosa led off the Bulldog second with a solo home run to right field. Wagner wasted little time in answering back, scoring four runs in the top of the third in taking a three-run lead. David Melfi led off the inning with a double to left-center. With one out, he moved to third on a wild pitch from Lowe. Kobayashi sent a hard-hit infield single to third that allowed Melfi to score the tying run.
 

 
The next batter, Mike Ruggiero, singled back to the pitch as Kobayashi raced to third. Faicchio reached on a fielder's choice as Kobayashi crossed the plate as the go-ahead run while Ruggiero made it safely to second on a throwing error by the Bryant third baseman. Griffin Selby laced a single back up the middle that plated home Ruggiero before Faicchio came into score on a Bey RBI single through the left side that made it 4-1. 
 

 
The Bulldogs cut the deficit to one, 4-3, in the bottom of the fourth. Petosa drew a one-out walk before John Tuccillo singled to short, giving the home team a pair of runners. Both runners would move into scoring position on a wild pitch from Wright. The next batter, Randy Carlo IV, ripped a double to the deepest part of left-center field that brought in both runners as Bryant trailed by one. 

The home team plated across two runs taking a 5-4 advantage in the bottom of the sixth. Smith was hit by a pitch and then stole second before a walk was issued to Petosa, giving Bryant a pair of runners on base. Wright was able to get Shane Kelly to fly out to left for the first out of the frame. Tuccillo was hit by a pitch that loaded the bases and concluded Wright's afternoon. 

Duquette came on and was able to get the out of Tuccillo at second on the fielder's choice from Carlo, but, Smith crossed the plate as the game was knotted at 4-4.  Allen lofted a high fly on the third-base side that was dropped by Quinn Mimnaugh in foul territory to extend the at-bat. Allen broke the tie with a single to center field as Petosa trouted in, giving the Bulldogs a one-run lead. 

Bryant added to its lead in the bottom of the seventh scoring two more runs, increasing the lead to 7-4. Jake Gustin reached on a throwing error by Bey over at second to start the inning. Alex Lane singled to put a pair of runners on. The next batter, Smith, singled back up the middle that scored Gustin, making it 6-4 in favor of Bryant. A walk to Petosa loaded the bases for Kelly, who subsequently grounded into a 6-4-3 double play that brought in Lane for the three-run lead. 

Wagner saved their rally for the ninth. With two outs, Garrett Bugarin was summoned as a pinch-hitter and reached first after being hit with a pitch. Kobayashi singled to right-center as the visitors had two on. Ruggiero connected on an RBI single to right field that brought in Bugarin as Wagner narrowed the gap, 7-5. 
 

 
Ahead in the count at 2-1, Faicchio uncorked a no-doubter, sending the Wagner bench into sheer excitement as the Seahawks rallied to take an 8-7 lead following the Laguna Beach, CA native's 12th rounder-tripper of the season. 
 

 
LePre came on for Duquette and issued on a leadoff walk to Lane. A failed pickoff attempt by the Staten Island native moved pinch-runner Matt Smith to second. Derek Smith would bring in Matt Smith on a double down the left-field line, tying the game at 8-8. The next batter, Petosa, doubled to left-center as Derek Smith scored the winning run from second as the Bulldogs took the series opener in walk-off fashion. 
 
Game two of the series is set for tomorrow afternoon with first pitch set for 3:00 p.m.
