Baseball's Comeback Falls Short In Midweek Tilt At St. John's

Queens, NY - The Wagner baseball team gave up four runs over the first two innings but battled back in the late stages, trimming the deficit to one in the eighth before St. John's added two more runs in holding off the Seahawk comeback, as the Green & White fell 6-4 on Wednesday afternoon.

Henry Martinez was one of five Seahawks to record a hit on the afternoon, as the Chino Hills, CA native recorded the lone RBI for the visitors. Maimu Kobayashi, Martinez, Dante Faicchio, and DiMaggio Cazares each scored a run for the Green and White.

John LaPointe (0-1) took the loss for Wagner (2-16), as he gave up four runs on six hits while walking three and striking out one in 1.2 innings.

Freshman Zach Gorman and junior Jagger Duquette combined to toss 5.1 innings of scoreless relief with Duquette recording a pair of strikeouts.

Tate Ballestero, Jayson Kramer each had three hits and an RBI while Kevin Michaels added two hits and two RBI for the Red Storm. Sonny Fauci was credited with the win, after tossing three innings of no-hit ball, as he finished with six strikeouts. Chuck Sanzio earned his fourth save of the year.

St. John's jumped to an early 2-0 lead as Michaels delivered a double down the left-field line to score Ballestreo but a great rely from Faicchio to Baker, who fired a strike to David Melfi at the plate nailed Jermaine White trying to score.

The Red Storm would get that second run as Austin Machado sent an RBI single to right field.

The home team added two more scores in the second, as Ballestero singled to center field that scored Jayson Kramer from second. Michaels singled and advanced to second on an error by Mike Ruggiero at short that plated home the second run of the inning, as the Red Storm went up 4-0.

Gorman came on for LaPointe and was able to get Machado to fly out to end the inning.

The game remained that way until the top of the eighth, when Wagner was able to plate across three runs without recording a hit to cut the deficit to one, 4-3.

Kobayashi was hit by a pitch and Martinez, who pinch-hit for Lukas Torres, walked as St. John's went to the bullpen. Faicchio followed up with a walk before a passed ball allowed both Kobayashi and Martinez to score.

Griffin Selby was hit by a pitch with two outs before Faicchio was able to cross the plate on an error by the shortstop as Ruggiero was able to reach base. A second passed ball in the inning moved up both runners but Tim Cunningham settled in and recorded a strikeout of Xavier Baker

In the bottom of the frame, the Red Storm tacked on two more scores to go up 6-3. Kramer delivered an RBI double to right-center before coming into score on an RBI single from David Glancy.

The Seahawks threatened in the ninth. Melfi led off with a single to center but was forced out at second. Kobayashi reached on a fielding error by the second baseman, giving Wagner a pair of runners on base.

Martinez, who was down in the count 0-1, ripped a single through the right side that plated home Cazares, as the Seahawks trailed by two, but couldn't get the tying or potential runs in as Sanzio struck out Mateo Matthews to end the ballgame.
