Baseball Puts Forth A Valiant Effort At No. 4 Vanderbilt, Falls In Game One Of Doubleheader, 12-7

Seahawks held leads of 6-4 and 7-4 before Commodores score eight runs over final three innings.

Nashville, TN - The Wagner College baseball team stood toe-to-toe with the No. 4 Vanderbilt University Commodores, as the Seahawks held leads of 6-4 after four and 7-4 after five before Vanderbilt scored eight runs over the final three innings to win, 12-7, in game one of Friday's doubleheader. 
 
Griffin Selby and Cody Bey each had two hits for Wagner (1-10) in the opener while Lukas Torres and David Melfi each drove in a pair. Mike Ruggiero, Bey, and Xavier Baker also added an RBI in today's contest. 
 
Starter Frankie Wright went five innings, giving up four runs on six while walking three and striking out but not factoring into the decision. Jagger Duquette was tagged with the loss, giving up four runs on five hits in two-thirds of an inning in relief of Wright. John LaPointe pitched the final 2.1 frames. 
 
Five Commodores (11-2) had multi-hit games as Spencer Jones and Tate Kolwyck each had three hits in the ball game. Dominic Keegan had two hits while driving in a game-high four RBIs while Jones and Kolwyck each added three RBIs. 
 
Chris McElvain lasted 3.2 innings, in which he surrendered six runs (three earned) on seven hits while walking one and striking out two. Patrick Reilly picked up the win after going 4.1 innings in which he allowed one run on three hits while striking out five and walking two batters. Thomas Schultz worked a scoreless ninth. 
 
Vandy got on the board first as Jones connected on a two-run home run to right-center field in the bottom of the first. Wagner wasted little time, responding with three runs in their half of the second. Mateo Matthews led off the frame with a walk. Selby singled through the left side and Ruggiero followed up with a single up the middle that brought in Matthews for the visitor's first run of the contest. 
 

Bey reached on an infield single that ricochetted off McElvain to load the bases. Down in the count (0-1), Melfi followed with a hard-hit ball, that again hit off McElvain as Ruggiero and Selby hustled in to score as the Seahawks took a 3-2 lead. 
 

In the bottom of the second, Carter Young reached on a one-out triple to right-center field. Kolwyck stepped in and on the second pitch of the at-bat, he drove one over the right-field wall, as the Commodores regained the lead, 4-3. 

Following a scoreless third, Wagner scored three times in the fourth to take a 6-4 lead. Ruggiero reached on a muffed throw by the first baseman before moving over to second on a single through the left side by Bey. With one out and the count even at 2-2, Baker collected his first collegiate RBI, sending a single through the left side, scoring Ruggiero. Maimu Kobayashi also singled through the left side but Bey was caught in a rundown for the second out of the inning. 
 

Reilly came on for McElvain and was greeted by Torres, who doubled down the third baseline and moved to third on a throwing error the Vandy shortstop as both Kobayashi and Baker trouted home, giving the Seahawks a two-run lead. 

Wagner tacked on an insurance run in the fifth. Matthews kicked off the frame with an infield single to short while Selby moved him over on a single through the right side. Ruggiero walked to load the bases. On the first pitch of the at-bat, Bey lofted a deep fly to right field, as Matthews tagged up and came across to score, as the Seahawks went ahead 7-4.

Vanderbilt rallied back in the sixth inning against Duquette. Young singled and moved to second on a balk before coming into score on the RBI single by Kolwyck, which made it 7-5.   Parker Noland reached on a single to centerfield, giving the Vandy Boys runners at first and second with no outs. Enrique Bradfield Jr. reached on a bunt single but Kolwyck was able to score on a throwing error by Duquette, as the Wagner trimmed down to one, 7-6. 

Jones flew out to Kobayashi in centerfield, as Noland tagged up to tie the game at 7-7. The Commodores regained the lead on a two-run RBI double by Keegan, which put a close to Duquette's afternoon, as Vandy led 9-7.  LaPointe came in and was able to strike out Javier Vaz to stop the Vanderbilt threat. The Commodores added a run in their half of the seventh as Noland singled through the right side which brought in Kolwyck for a 10-7 advantage in favor of the home team. 

The Commodores added three more in the eighth off the bat of Keegan, who sent a three-run home run high over the left-field wall as Vanderbilt increased the lead to five. Schultz came on in the ninth and struck out the first two batter he faced before getting Matthews to ground out to first to end the first game of the twinbill.
