Defending Indoor Track & Field Champions Sit In Second After Day One Of 2022 Northeast Conference Championships

Seahawks are trailing FDU by just two points after four scored events

Staten Island, NY - The Wagner men's indoor track & field team, the defending Northeast Conference (NEC) champions, are just two points off the lead after the completion of the first day of competition at Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex. 
 
After four events scored, Fairleigh Dickinson holds the lead with 38 points followed by the Seahawks with 36. LIU rounded out the top-three with 19 points. 
 
Sacred Heart and Mount St. Mary's are tied for fourth with 16 points while Saint Francis U (12), Central Connecticut (10), Merrimack (5), Bryant (3), and St. Francis Brooklyn (1) round out the field. 
 

 
The Knights held the lead for the majority of the day until the Green & White quickly closed the gape, thanks to their impressive performances in the 3,000m. 
 
LIU's Elyas Ayyoub won the event with a time of 8:25.21, but the Green & White occupied spots 2 through 6, collecting 26 points, led by Dominic Palermo, who clocked in second with a time of 8:26.36. 
 

 
Newcomer Jean Uminski finished third in his first-ever NEC Championships with a time of 8:28.41. Johnny Sokoll (8:31.05), Anthony Bentivegna (8:32.57), and Robert Guidicipietro (8:34.74) all put forth impressive performances. 
 
Corey Durden added six more points for the Green & White, as he took third overall in the weight throw, with a mark of 17.18m. 
 
Ryan Lane cleared 6.94m in the long jump, adding two more points to the Seahawk ledger while 
Newcomer Kharlin Watkins cleared a personal best of 1.93m, tallying two more points for Wagner. 
 
The Seahawks will have several members competing on Day 2 of the NEC Championships. Joshua Cadet finished as the top qualifier in the 200m dash, checking in with a time of 21.85. 
 

 
Three Seahawks will be among the field in the 800m, led by William Cuthbertson, who finished with a time of 1:54.43 to lead the field on Sunday. Teammates Mahmoud Abdalla (1:55.96) and Luke Cunningham (1:56.42) will join Cuthbertston in tomorrow's championship race.
 

 
In the mile, Wagner will also have three competing, headlined by Michael Hubert, who finished the preliminaries first with a time of 4:20.34. Joining Hubert will be Palermo, who finished at 4:20.78, and Cuthbertson, who clocked in at 4:21.15. 
 

 
 
Jason Marchese along with Thomas Corel will represent the Green & White in the 500m, as Marchese qualified third with a time of 1:05.53 while Corel clocked in at 1:06.23. 
 

 
The Seahawks will have two runners competing in the 400m, as Cyril Babcanec and Joshua Cadet will be in action after posting preliminary times of 49.49 and 49.66, respectively. 
 

 
The final day of the competition begins tomorrow, February 21 at 9:15 with the weigh throw women's trial/final along with the men's and women's triple jump. The first set of track events is scheduled for 10:00 am with the finals of the men's 60H followed by the women.
