Baseball Scores Twice In The Ninth To Defeat East Tennessee State

Wagner posts first victory of the season and in the head coaching ledger of Craig Noto

Johnson City, TN - Trailing 4-3 heading into the top of the ninth, Maimu Kobayashoi came through for Wagner with the go-ahead two-run RBI single to left field that lifted the Seahawks past East Tennessee State, 5-4, in the series opener on Friday afternoon.

Kobayashi finished 2 for 5 at the plate with two runs scored and those two pivotal RBIs. Lukas Torres went 1 for 4 with an RBI while Matteo Matthews, Dante Faicchio, Cody Bey, and Mike Ruggerio each had a hit in the contest.

Eric Crouse went four innings, giving up three runs on two hits while walking two and striking out three batters in his Seahawk debut. Ruben Del Castillo tossed four innings of one-run ball, allowing a hit while also walking two and striking out three batters. Mike Pirrotta was able to weave around the potential game-winning run, as he earned his first save of the season and second of his Seahawk career.

Leo Jiminian led the way for ETSU, going 2 for 3 with a home run and two RBIs. Cam Norgren connected on a solo home run while Jackson Green added an RBI for the Buccaneers.

Zach Kirby went five innings, giving up three runs (one earned) on five hits while walking one and striking out three but not factoring in the decision. Landon Smiddy took the loss, after going four innings in which he gave up two unearned runs on two hits while striking out three batters.

Wagner struck for the game's first run as Kobayashi started the inning collecting his first career hit. He moved to second before advancing to third on a failed pickoff attempt by Kirby. He came around to score on the grounder to short off the bat of Griffin Selby, who garnered his first RBI in a Wagner uniform.

The visitors tacked on two more runs in the second. Mike Ruggiero reached on an infield single to his counterpart at short. Ethan Valdez reached on fielder's choice and scored on a throwing error by Norgren, giving the visitors a 2-0 lead. The next batter for Wagner, Torres, tripled to center field on a 2-2 pitch that brought in Kobayashi as the lead increased to 3-0.

East Tennessee State cut into the Seahawks lead in the bottom half of the frame, as Jiminian connected on a two-run home run that cleared the left-field fence as Wagner was now ahead, 3-2.  Norgren made up for his earlier fielding mistake as he sent the first pitch he saw from Crouse over the left-centerfield wall to tie the game at 3-3.

The score would remain knotted at 3-3 until the bottom of the sixth when the Buccaneers plated the go-ahead run off the bat of Green as he took Del Castillo's 2-0 pitch to right field, which allowed Jared Paladino to score.

The Seahawks managed to crack through against Smiddy after he set them down in order in the seventh and eighth. David Melfi reached on a one-out throwing error by Norgren. Bey sent a single to right field before DiMaggio Cazares, who came on as a pinch-hitter, was hit by a pitch. On the first pitch that Kobayashi saw from Smiddy, he was able to drive it deep to left field, as Bey and Melfi scored the tying and go-ahead runs, but, Cazares was thrown out at the plate.

Pirrotta was brought in to pitch the ninth. The first batter he faced, Skyler Cannady, reached first after being hit by a pitch. With one out, Jiminian came up and singled to right field, giving ETSU two men on. Bryce Hodge lofted one to right field, but both runners didn't advance.

Tommy Barth was summoned as a pinch-hitter for Justin Hanvey and reached on an infield single to short, which loaded the bases for Ashton King.  King worked the count in his favor to 2-1, before Pirrotta was able to get King to foul out to Matthews at first, as Wagner hung on for their first victory of the season, and the first in the head coaching career of Craig Noto

The series resumes on Saturday afternoon from Thomas Stadium at 2:00 p.m.
