Baseball Falls In Season Opener At College Of Charleston

Charleston, SC - The Wagner College baseball team dropped the 2022 season opener at the College of Charleston, 20-5.  It marked the first contest for the Seahawks against the Cougars.

Cody Bey paced the Wagner offense, going 2 for 3 with a run scored and drove in a run. Newcomer Dante Faicchio went 1 for 4 while delivering his first RBI in his first game as a Seahawk. Henry Martinez also added an RBI and went 1 for 2. Josh Casado (0-1) was charged with the loss after going 4.1 innings, giving up six runs (five earned) on eight hits.

College of Charleston finished with 20 hits resulting in 20 runs. Four of those hits went for home runs. Six Cougars had multi-hit games, led by three hits apiece by Tanner Steffy and JT Marr.

Joseph Mershon, Trotter Harlan, Luke Wood, and Preston Hall each connected on a home run, with Mershon, Steffy, Harlan, and Wood each finishing with three RBI on the day.

College of Charleston plated a run in the first two innings in taking a 2-0 lead. Following a scoreless third, the Cougars scored on Hall's first home run of the season.

Wagner got on the board in the top of the fifth that ultimately chased starter Ty Good from the contest. David Melfi drew a leadoff walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch by Good. With the count full, Bey was able to come through with a single to left field, as Melfi raced around the bases to score the first run of the year for the Green & White.

Charleston went to the bullpen as Trey Pooser came on and got Mike Ruggiero to ground into the inning-ending 6-4-3 double-play. In the bottom half of the frame, Harlan doubled to left field that plated home Steffy and put a close to Casado's outing.

Ruben Del Castillo came on in relief and gave up a double to Wood down the third baseline, scoring two on the play. Following a walk to Hall, Wood scored on a wild pitch by Del Castillo as the CofC's lead increased to 7-1.

The Cougars added nine more runs over the next two innings, with Harlan and Wood sending back-to-back home runs in the bottom of the sixth before Steffy tripled down the right-field line in the seventh that cleared the bases.

Wagner plated across two in their half of the eighth. Martinez led off with a single to right-center. DiMaggio Cazares, who pinch-hit for Lukas Torres, singled to right, as the visitors had runners on the corner.

Down in the count, Faicchio sent a sacrifice fly to left field, as Martinez came across to score while Cazares moved to second on a throwing error by the left fielder. Griffin Selby drew a walk and Cazares came in on the passed ball.

Mershon added to Charleston's lead, as he sent a three-run home run over the right-centerfield wall. The Seahawks added two more scores in the final inning as Bey scored on a wild pitch before Martinez sent an RBI grounder to first base.

Pooser (1-0) earned the win after throwing two scoreless innings in relief of Good.

Game two of the weekend series is slated to start at noon.
