Staten Island, NY - The Wagner women's basketball team returns home to the Spiro Sports Center on Thursday night as they welcome the Sacred Heart University Pioneers for the Seahawks' Play4Kay Game. 

"Play4Kay" is a national campaign benefiting the Kay Yow Cancer Fund, which honors the legacy of Kay Yow, who was a Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame selection in 2000 and passed away in January of 2009 after a 22-year battle with breast cancer. 


OPENING TIP...
  • The Seahawks will look for the season sweep of the Pioneers for the first time since 2000.
  • Thursday's matchup pits the Northeast Conference (NEC) top two three-point field goal percentage defense teams in the league, as the Green & White rank first at 25.4 percent while the Pioneers are next at 27.6 percent. 
  • Wagner will look to bounce back after being edged out by the defending league champions, Mount St. Mary's, 53-51, last Thursday in Emmitsburg, MD.
  • Sacred Heart enters the contest looking to halt a season-high seven game losing streak after dropping a 20-point decision at Bryant (67-47) on Friday. 

SERIES BREAKDOWN AGAINST SACRED HEART...
  • Thursday's contest marks the 45th all-time meeting between the two programs with Sacred Heart holding a 33-11 edge in the head-to-head series.
  • Wagner earned a 52-38 road triumph back on January 8 at the Pitt Center. 
    Zhaneia Thybulle and Alex Cowan each went for double-figures in the victory, as Thybulle poured in a team-high 16 points with five assists while Cowan chipped in 11 points, nine of which coming from three-point range. 
  • The Seahawks are just 2-8 in their last ten meetings with the Pioneers, while going 2-3 over their last five matchups.
  • Wagner will look for their first season series sweep of SHU since 2000, when they earned three straight wins (Jan. 18 on the road; Feb. 23 at home and March 3 in West Long Branch, NJ.
     

SCOUTING THE PIONEERS...
  • The Pioneers enter play with a 5-13 overall record and a 4-9 mark in league contests. 
  • Sacred Heart is looking to snap a season-long seven game losing streak after dropping a 67-47 road contest at Bryant on Friday. 
  • SHU ranks third in the contest in field goal percentage defense at 41.0 percent, trailing only FDU (37.4) and Wagner (37.8). 
  • Individually, Sonia Smith is the team's leading scorer, as she is pouring in 12.4 points per game, good for ninth in the conference. She is also third in steals (1.8 spg), fourth in assists (4.5 apg) and top-15 in both free-throw percentage (66.1) and three-point field goal percentage (36.4). 
  • Teammate Adrianne Hagood is among the top-15 scorers at 10.9 ppg while Olivia Tucker is among the top-20 at 9.8 points per game.

  • As of Feb. 16, of the 26 first-year head coaches this season in the NCAA, Wagner's first-year bench boss, Terrell Coburn, is xx with a .591 win percentage and tied for the xx-most wins with 13.

WINNING WAYS…
  • In Wagner's 13 wins this season, the Seahawks have outscored their opponents by 11.6 points per game, as the Seahawks offense has put up 63.8 points per game while yielding just 52.2 points per game. 
  • The Green & White have shot the ball well, connecting for 43.4 percent from the floor while hitting on 38.6 percent from three-point range. The opposition, however, has been held to just 36.2 percent shooting and on 21.1 percent from long distance (50-237).

  • The Green & White's defense has stifled their opposition, as they are being held to just 35.4 percent shooting and 28.1 percent from long range (16 of 57).

  • Krista Grava and Kem Nwabudu are averaging double-figures on Thursdays, with EKG scoring 16.5 points  to go along with a team-high 6.0 rebounds in 30.0 minutes a contest.

  • Wagner moved to 7-3 on the season at the Spiro Sports Center, as they are averaging 62.9 points per game while connecting on 42.2 percent from the floor and 34.4 percent from three-point distance. 
  • Opponents are averaging 58.7 points per game on 37.5 percent shooting from the field and just 23.5 percent from long range (48-204). 
  • Krista Grava (15.1 ppg/5.5 rpg/47.7% FG/87.0% FT) and Alex Cowan (10.4ppg/2.0 apg/2.4rpg/42.4 3PT%) are both tallying double-figures at home this season, with Thybulle (9.9 ppg/5.1rpg/5.4apg) also producing a stellar statline.

  • Senior forward Emilija Krista Grava became the 25th member of the 1,000 point club on November 28 against New Hampshire.
  • Krista Grava, who recorded the milestone feat with 59.2 seconds showing on the clock in the second quarter, finished the game with 11 points while also grabbing five rebounds.
