Philadelphia, PA – The Wagner women's fencing team began its spring season with two victories at the Philadelphia Invitational on Saturday.
On the campus of the University of Pennsylvania, the Green & White competed against five schools: Cornell, Haverford, Johns Hopkins, the University of Pennsylvania and Sacred Heart. The Seahawks prevailed over Haverford and Sacred Heart while falling to Cornell, Johns Hopkins and the University of Pennsylvania. The Seahawks competed in the first day of the two day event as they participated in the first, third, fourth, sixth and seventh rounds.
In round one, the Seahawks handled Haverford 14-10 as they claimed victories in the foil and épee competitions, 6-3 while falling in the sabre weapon, 4-2.
In the third round, the Seahawks defeated Sacred Heart, 20-7. Its biggest victory of the round came in the épee weapon with an 8-1 victory. In the foil and sabre bouts, the Green & White claimed 6-3 victories.
In the fourth round, Wagner went up against Johns Hopkins as they were defeated in all three weapons for a final score of 20-7. Johns Hopkins claimed a 9-0 victory in the foil bout while claiming a 6-3 victory in the épee weapon. In the sabre portion of the round, Johns Hopkins won a close contest, 5-4.
In round six, Wagner went up against the hosts, the University of Pennsylvania. The Quakers swept the Seahawks in the foil bout, 9-0 while claiming a 6-3 victory in the épee bout, 6-3. In the sabre competition, the Quakers walked away with a 7-2 victory for a final score of 22-5.
The final round of the tournament for Wagner was the seventh round as Cornell defeated Wagner 21-6. The Big Red handled the Seahawks in the sabre and épee bouts behind 9-0 and 8-1 victories, respectively. The closest bout of the round was the foil weapon which saw Cornell prevail 5-4 over Wagner.
The Seahawks will hit the road again next weekend when they will travel to South Bend, Indiana to participate in the DeCicco Duals at Notre Dame.
