Staten Island, NY - For the first time since December 29, the Wagner women's basketball team returns home to the Spiro Sports Center for a pair of home contests, beginning on Friday afternoon as the Seahawks play host to the LIU Sharks. 
WAGNER ATHLETICS SPECTATOR POLICY...
  • In accordance with New York State and New York City guidelines the Wagner College Athletic Department has announced the following spectator policy for all indoor athletic competitions:
  • All guests will be required to wear masks
  • All guests over 11 years old must show proof of vaccination 
  • Children under 12 must be accompanied by a vaccinated adult
  • Physical tickets must be picked up on game day (can still be purchased and reserved in advance)

OPENING TIP...
  • Wagner went 2-2 over their four-game road trip, as the Seahawks averaged 57.0 points per game on 40.5 percent shooting from the field. 
    • Senior guard Zhaneia Thybulle led the way, averaging 10.0 points and 4.0 assists per game. 
    • Teammate Kem Nwabudu pulled down 7.3 rebounds over the four-game road swing while chipping in 8.5 points per contest. 

SERIES BREAKDOWN AGAINST LIU...
  • Friday's contest against LIU marks the 89th all-time meeting between the two New York City Northeast Conference (NEC) members, with Wagner holding a 47-41 edge in the head-to-head series.
  • Wagner is 6-4 over the last ten meetings with the Sharks while posting a 4-1 mark in the last five contests, which includes sweeping the season series a year ago.
  • The Seahawks outscored the Sharks by 10.5 points per game last season with Emilija Krista Grava leading the way, pouring in an average of 15.0 ppg while Kem Nwabudu nearly averaged a double-double, scoring 9.0 ppg to go along with a team-leading 7.5 rpg against LIU.

SCOUTING THE SHARKS...
  • LIU enters with an overall record of 1-13 and 1-5 in league play. The Sharks earned their first win of the season on the road at Central Connecticut (Jan. 15), defeating the Blue Devils 62-51.
  • Brandy Thomas leads the Sharks with 10.6 points per game while also pulling down a team-high 4.6 rebounds a contest. Collectively, LIU is averaging 54.6 points per game on 34.4 percent shooting from the field. The Sharks are hitting 32.3 percent from three-point range.

FIRST-YEAR SUCCESS...
  • Head coach Terrell Coburn has Wagner off to a 10-5 start in his first year at the helm of the program.  Through games played on January 19, Coach Coburn ranks seventh with a .667 win percentage.

HOME COOKING...
  • Wagner moved to 6-0 on the year at the Spiro Sports Center after posting a 65-56 triumph over Saint Francis U in the NEC opener on December 29. 
  • The Seahawks are averaging nearly 63.0 points per game at home this season while shooting 44.8 percent from the floor and 43.3 percent from three-point range. 
  • Wagner's defense has been on full display in front of the Grymes Hill faithful, holding opponents to just 54.0 points per game on 35.9 percent shooting from the field and 21.1 percent from three-point distance. 
  • Over the six-game home span, Wagner has dished out nearly five more assists per game than their opponents (15.3-10.2) while producing a +2.5 on the boards (33.0-30.5). 
  • Three Seahawks are averaging double-figures at home this season with Krista Grava leading the way at 14.7 ppg. The senior forward is shooting 48.0 percent from the field while grabbing nearly five caroms a contest. 
  • Alex Cowan has chipped in 10.5 points per game in 26.2 minutes a game at home. The Bowie, MD native has converted on 58.8 percent from the outside at home this season. 
  • Lastly, senior point guard Zhaneia Thybulle has filled up the stat sheet, averaging 10.3 ppg, 5.0 rpg, 6.0 apg, 1.8 spg in 34.3 minutes a contest at the Spiro Sports Center.
 
TALE OF TWO HALVES…
  • Over the first half, the Seahawks are averaging 27.9 points per game while shooting a collective 38.5 percent from the floor and 37.2 percent from three-point range.
  • Wagner is shooting just 65.9 percent from the free-throw line while being outrebounded 17.3 to 16.1 over the first 20 minutes of the contest. 
  • On the other hand, when play picks up in the second half, the Green & White is scoring 32.9 points per game while yielding 29.1 to their opponents.
  • The Seahawks are shooting a robust 44.1 percent from the floor and 38.3 percent from three-point range in the second half. 
  • Their opponents have struggled out of the halftime break, hitting only 34.9 percent from the floor and 22.5 percent from long distance (31 of 138).

  • Senior point Zhaneia Thybulle continues to solidify her name as one of the elite guards in the Northeast Conference and the nation.
  • The Elmont, NY native is 39th in the NCAA in assists per game, averaging 5.1. In terms of total assists, Thybulle has dished out a NEC-leading 76 total assists, which ranks 45th in the nation. 

E-1K-G...
  • Senior forward Emilija Krista Grava became the 25th member of the 1,000 point club on November 28 against New Hampshire.
  • Krista Grava, who recorded the milestone feat with 59.2 seconds showing on the clock in the second quarter, finished the game with 11 points while also grabbing five rebounds.
