Baseball's Late Rally Falls Short As Seahawks Drop Series Finale To FDU, 6-5, On Sunday

Teaneck, NJ – Trailing 5-2 heading into the bottom of the eighth, the Wagner College baseball team scored three times in the frame but the Fairleigh Dickinson University Knights were able to push across the deciding run in the top half of the ninth as the Seahawks dropped the series finale, 6-5, on Sunday afternoon.

With the loss, Wagner drops to 9-21 overall and 6-18 in Northeast Conference action while FDU moves to 8-23 and 7-17 in league play.

Ethan Valdez, Jared Gillen, Freddy Sabido, and Griffin Schneider notched two hits for the Seahawks. Sabido drove in two RBI while Gillen added an RBI as well.

Justin Beyer went 6.2 innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on two hits while walking three, striking out six batters, and not factoring in the decision. Mike Pirrotta took the loss after going 1.2 innings and allowing the go-ahead run to score in the ninth.

Hunter D'Amato was the catalyst for the Knights, going 2 for 5 with a run scored and driving in two RBI for the visitors. James Donlon, Brad Levinson, and David Bordieri Jr. each added an RBI in today's contest.

Similar to Beyer, FDU's Brendan Medoro, who earned the save in Friday's contest, worked 7.1 innings in giving up three runs (two earned) on seven hits while striking out five and not factoring into the decision.

Tristan Plescia, who came on for Marc Bisogno, earned the victory while Nicolas Kythreotis recorded his first save of the season.

The Knights took the early lead as Donlon sent an RBI grounder to second that scored Mike Veit, who led off the game with a walk. Wagner answered back in their half of the first inning as David Melfi reached on a two-base fielding error by Veit, as Gillen raced around the bases to score from first to even the contest at 1-1.

Beyer retired the next six FDU hitters before the Seahawks went ahead in the bottom of the third, taking a 2-1 lead. Tyler Sanfilippo drew a four-pitch walk before Valdez and Jake Lutz reached on bunt singles to load the bases. Gillen sent a deep fly to centerfield as Sanfilippo tagged up and crossed the plate, giving Wagner its first lead of the ballgame.

Both teams went scoreless in the fourth, but the Knights plated across a pair of runs in retaking the lead, 3-2. Bordieri Jr. led off with a walk and Michael Gruber reached on a mishap by Melfi.

TJ Werner singled through the left side to load the bases. Beyer was able to settle back on the mound and retired Veit for the first out. D'Amato sent a hotshot to Valdez at third as the Tampa, FL native had trouble fielding the ball, as both Bordieri Jr. and Gruber came into score.

The score remained that way until the top of the eighth as the Knights tacked on two more runs in building a 5-2 advantage. D'Amato sent a single to left field to start the frame. John LaPointe was able to strike out Justin Sierra for the first out.

Donlon reached on an infield single up the first baseline that concluded LaPointe's outing. Pirrotta came on and Levinson was able to send one back up the middle, scoring D'Amato, as the Knights doubled up Wagner, 4-2.

Following a walk to Tommy Verga, which loaded the bases, Bordieri Jr. worked a walk as Donlon scored to increase the lead to 5-2.

Wagner staged a late rally in the eighth to tie the game at 5-5. Gillen laced a single up the middle that ended Medoro's afternoon. Melfi got the count to 3-1 on Bisogno and doubled down the left-field line.

Sabido was next and followed suit with a double to left-center as both Gillen and Melfi came into score that made it 5-4. FDU went to the bullpen a second time in the inning as Plescia came on to pitch.

Mike Ruggiero placed a well-executed sacrifice bunt that moved Sabido to third. With Schneider at the plate, the umpires signaled that Plescia balked, which allowed Sabido to trot home, tying the game at 5-5. Wagner built on the momentum as Schneider doubled to right-center and Caleb Ward, pinch-hitting for Emil Matti, walked.

Sanfilippo had a chance to drive in the go-ahead run but Plescia was able to strike him out swinging, concluding the threat.

In the ninth, Werner reached on a throwing error by Ruggiero and moved the second on the sacrifice bunt to third from Veit.

With one out, D'Amato sent a single to center field that scored the go-ahead run for the Knights as Werner made it 6-5. Pirrotta was able to retire the final two batters to leave it as a one-run deficit.

Against Kythreotis, Valdez worked a leadoff walk but was retired as AJ Medrano grounded into the 6-4-3 double play. Gillen was Wagner's last hope to extend the game and worked the count full.

On the final pitch of the game, Gillen sent a high-arching fly to deep center that looked destined to clear the fence but Veit tracked under it to record the final out as the Knights secured the series win.

The Seahawks return to FirstEnergy Park in Lakewood, NJ this upcoming weekend as Wagner welcomes the Bryant University Bulldogs for a three-game set, beginning on Friday, May 14.

On Saturday, May 15, Wagner will recognize their senior class with an on-field ceremony before closing out the homestand on Sunday afternoon.

All three games are scheduled for a 1:00 p.m. start.
