Baseball Takes Series Opener, 6-4, From Bryant On Friday Afternoon

Lakewood, NJ -  Behind seven strong innings from senior Ryan Lauk and a timely two-run RBI double from David Melfi, the Wagner College baseball team earned a 6-4 win over Bryant to open the weekend series at FirstEnergy Park on Friday afternoon.

The Seahawks improve to 10-21 overall on the season and 7-18 in Northeast Conference (NEC) while the Bulldogs fall to 22-12-1 overall and 18-4 in league play.

Jared Gillen extended his hitting streak to 13 straight games after finished 3 for 4 with a run scored and driving in an RBI. Melfi finished 2 for 4 with the two RBIs that turned out to be the pivotal runs for the Green & White. Cody Bey added two hits while Mike Ruggiero added an RBI base hit.

Lauk retired the first nine batters he faced, eventually allowing three runs (two earned) on six hits while striking out four for his second win of the season. For Lauk, he's recorded at least four strikeouts in every start this season.

The veteran right-hander needs five strikeouts to reach the top-15 on the Wagner all-time career strikeouts list, which would move him into a tie with Kyle Morrison ('09), who finished with 147 strikeouts.

Kevin Wiseman earned his fourth save of the season after throwing the final two innings. The Axtell, TX native gave up a solo home run for the only run and hit on his line while striking out four batters.

Shane Kelly led the way for the Bulldogs with two hits while Matt Woods scored twice. Kelly, Liam McGill, and Damaurys Rodriguez each drove in an RBI for the visitors.

Tyler Mattison took the loss after going four innings, allowing six runs (one earned) on eight hits while walking three and striking out two. Austin Wainer didn't allow a run in his four innings of relief, striking out six batters and giving up two walks and two hits.

Wagner jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second. Freddy Sabdio led off the frame with a double to left field. Griffin Schneider moved Sabido to third on a groundout. Ruggiero sent a single and advanced to second on the throw home that plated home Sabido. The second run for the Seahawks came on a wild pitch, as Tyler Sanfilippo drew a walk, but the ball trickled away from Rodriguez to the backstop.

The Bulldogs tied the game at 2-2 in the fourth. Woods reached on a bunt single up the third baseline. Jake Gustin was hit by a pitch, giving the visitors two runners on. McGill laced a hard-hit ball to second that scored Woods.

Bryant loaded the bases after Derek Smith singled to right-center. Lauk settled down on the mound, getting James Ciliento to pop on that Lauk was able to snag in foul territory. Rodriguez took the first pitch he saw to left as Gustin tagged up from third and tied the game.

The Seahawks erupted for four runs in the bottom of the inning, taking a 6-2 lead. After the first two men were retired, Ethan Valdez singled through the right side. Henry Martinez walked, then Bey sent a grounder that went through the legs of the third baseman as Valdez scored the go-ahead run. With the count in his favor at 2-1, Gillen singled, bringing home Martinez, making it 4-2. Melfi came through for the Green & White, sending a double to deep left field, scoring Bey and Gillen putting Wagner up by four.

Lauk kept the Bryant hitters at bay until they added a run in the eighth inning. Woods led off the inning with a walk. Gustin singled to right and moved to second on the throwing error by Ruggiero, which allowed Woods to come in to score and concluding Lauk's afternoon.

Wiseman came on and got McGill to pop out to first for the first out of the inning. Gustin moved to third before Smith walked, giving Bryant runners on the corner with just one out. With Ciliento up at-bat, Smith was trying to steal second but the umpire called Ciliento out on batter's inference before Wiseman struck out Rodriguez to end the threat.

Kelly cut Wagner's lead to two, 6-4, after connecting on a solo home run to left. Wiseman regained his composure on the hill, striking out the side to earn the save.

Wagner and Bryant continue its weekend series tomorrow afternoon from FirstEnergy Park. Before the start of Saturday's game, Wagner will recognize its 2021 Senior Class.
