Baseball Falls To Bryant, 6-0, On Senior Day

Lakewood, NJ -  The Bulldog pitching staff limited Wagner to just three hits Saturday, as the Seahawks fell to Bryant, 6-0, on Senior Day at FirstEnergy Park.

Wagner falls to 10-22 overall on the year and 7-19 in Northeast Conference (NEC) play while Bryant moves to 23-12-1 and 19-4 in league contests. The two teams will play the series finale on Sunday, with the first pitch scheduled for 1:00 p.m.

David Melfi, Griffin Schneider, and Ethan Valdez each had a hit for the Seahawks. Nick Zuppe gave up two runs on three hits before exiting the ballgame.

Nicholas Hanson pitched 5.1 innings in relief of Zuppe, giving up an unearned run on three hits while walking two and striking out a pair of batters. John LaPointe went the rest of the way, allowing three runs (two earned) while walking one and striking out one in his three innings of work.

Tyler Schoff threw seven scoreless innings in which he gave up all three Wagner hits while walking one and striking out nine in picking up his sixth victory of the season. Kevin Gould and Jack Ipsen set down the final six Seahawk batters to clinch the win.

Liam McGill led the way with three hits while Jake Gustin and Derek Smith each had two hits with Smith driving in two of the six runs for the visitors.

Wagner's defense was on display early on. Gustin reached with a one-out single to right field. McGill doubled to right-center. Gustin tried to score the game's first run but Schneider was able to hit Mike Ruggiero on the cutoff, who then fired one to Melfi, as the second-year backstop was able to able the tag to a diving Gustin for the second out of the inning.

McGill moved to third on a wild pitch from Zuppe before Smith singled up the middle for the game's first run. Hanson came on in relief and issued a walk to James Ciliento to give Bryant runners on the corner for Shane Kelly. Kelly sent a single to left that plated home Smith to give the Bulldogs a 2-0 lead.

The visitors added a run in the second as Matt Woods sent a sacrifice fly to center after fouling off the first four pitches he saw from Hanson as Bryant went up 3-0.

The game remained that way until the ninth inning as the Bulldogs tacked on three more runs. Gustin plated home Brian Nicolas on the RBI grounder to first. McGill sent a double down the left-field line that made it 5-0 before scoring on Smith's double that upped the lead to 6-0.
