Stony Brook, NY - The Wagner men's basketball team started the second half with a 22-2 run on its way to a dominant 78-49 victory over Stony Brook on Saturday.
With the victory, the Seahawks improve to 3-1 on the season, while the Seawolves drop to 3-4 on the year.
Graduate student
Alex Morales led all scorers with 19 points, nine rebounds, and six assists, while fellow graduate student
Elijah Ford added 14 points. Redshirt senior
Raekwon Rogers contributed 10 points and eight rebounds.
The Seahawks held a 43-27 advantage on the glass, 20-10 edge in assists, and outscored Stony Brook 42-18 in the paint.
On the defensive end, head coach
Bashir Mason's squad held the America East preseason favorite to 30.9% (17-55) shooting throughout the contest.
Wagner never trailed throughout the contest, as baskets by Ford, Morales, as well as the first points in a Seahawk uniform by junior
Ashton Miller helped the Green and White jump out to a 6-2 advantage. Miller finished the day with eight points off the bench.
Another bucket by Ford with 10:32 to play in the first half capped off a 7-0 Wagner run and extended the lead to 15-7, before consecutive baskets by Morales with time winding down in the first half gave the Seahawks a 30-23 advantage at the midway mark.
Coming out of the half, Ford and Morales scored on consecutive possessions, forcing Stony Brook to call a quick timeout. Following a basket by Stony Brook's Jahlil Jenkins, the Seahawks scored 18 straight points, capped off by a Rogers layup with 13:40 to play that gave Wagner a 52-25 lead.
The Seahawks led by as many as 32 points in the final minutes of the contest in earning their third victory of the season.
